Loreto was the first Spanish settlement in California. Located on the Baja Peninsula, it was the capital of Las California's from 1697 (when it was founded by the Jesuit Missionaries)until 1777. After the Jesuits were kicked out in 1767, the Franciscans took over the running of the mission.
