∙ 11y agoAt the end of WWII Germany was divided into four military occupation zones by the Allied Powers and were controlled respectively by France, the United Kingdom (UK), the United States (US), and the Soviet Union (USSR).
In 1949 the areas controlled by France, the UK and US were merged and became the Federal Republic of Germany, also known as West Germany. East Germany was controlled by the Soviet Union.
