Demerol can also be used in an IV drip form like morphine. Hydrocodone is designed for mild to moderate pain where as demerol is designed for moderate to severe pain. A general rule of thumb is you need 10X more medication (same medication) by mouth to get the same pain relief as you do if the medication is given IV. and a shot form maybe 5X.
