Avast, is definitely a top contender for one of the best antiviruses. Most people, don't have the money for a paid antivirus, so that eliminates most antiviruses, leaving three main contenders, Avast, AVG and Avira. All three of these have pro's and con's. So to make this as simple as possible here are the pro's and con's of each.

Yes, from what I have seen it is more a Virus than it is and Antivirus.

I disagree. I've had Avast Antivirus for over 2 years and nothing as gone wrong. I even have a cousin that is really good with PC'S and he recommends it. If there's any antivirus software you can get, get Avast. Genre234

Avast is not a virus, I've had it for 5 years and its really useful. Probably the only decent free anitvirus you can get.

Really depends on whether you're talking about the free or pay versions of protection. For free security, I wouldn't recommend either - they both have a lot of pitfalls. For instance, I used to use AVG 2010 Free and if I opened an infected page, it would only tell me after the page was opened that it was harmful.

If you were looking for free security, I would recommend Microsoft Security Essentials. It has regular file scans, active protection (which means it fights viruses as they're found on your PC) and won't allow you to open harmful pages/files.

I like Avast more as far as I really got used to it. It has lots of benefits. The most important for me is its simplicity. Consisting of 4 main protection components (File shield, Behavior shield, web and mail shield) it is possible to turn off/on the needed protection layer or disable/activate others. The next benefit is low price and solid protection at the same time. Avast offers a silent mode in order to hide alerts. The antivirus is suitable for both Windows and Mac. It also gathers anonymized user data, but we can easily disable the function. Avast free antivirus is one of the coolest complete tools, dealing with internet, email, local files and instant messages threats. One may not like that it's not appropriate for commercial use, but for home and personal use it is quite perfect. It is also required to registrate periodically, but not as often as to get bored of it. Sometimes ads are shown, so take it into account if such things bother you. All in all Avast scans browser plugins and network, identifies routers, has no not disturb mode and updates malware definitions.

AVG in its turn does not require running a great number of resources as Avast does. The antivirus is user-friendly and easy to download. It also runs on different platforms (WIndows, Mac, Android, but iOS not yet). It is a good tool for beginners. To its advantages belong impressive performance, simple interface, its customixation according to the user's needs and speed. But free version of AVG offers only basic protection, unlike the Avast. If to talk about paid version it is more expensive than Avast's one.

So, Avast and AVG are similar in many aspects, but as for me, Avast is better and more reliable.
