Joseph Smith restored the original Christian Church that Jesus Christ set up on the earth. He translated scripture, received visitations from God and Angels, and restored the Priesthood (Authority to lead the church and act in the name of God). He is considered a prophet, seer, and revelator - much like the prophets of the Old Testament.
John Smith had nothing to do with Mormonism. Perhaps you are thinking of Joseph Smith, who founded Mormonism, and whom Mormons consider to be a prophet.
