The book is real, Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote about her life. The t.v show is partly real, there are some episodes that were from the books like town party, country party in season 1. That was a whole chapter in the book On the Banks of Plum Creek by: Laura Ingalls Wilder but, the episode Mr. Edward's Homecoming in season 1, isn't true. Mr. Edward's never came to live on the banks of plum creek with the Ingalls family, he stayed in Kansas.

Realistic Fiction, or Non fiction because most of the things in Laura Ingalls Wilders books are things that happen in her life, also some of the things didn't really happen , or they might have happened but she can't tell you exactly what happened.

Yes, Little House on the Prairie is not 100% accurate about what happened to Laura when she was young, but its largely what she - and especially her older sister and parents - remembered about it, and that is true of all the Little House books. Sometimes she changed the time of the incident, or the place it happened, or the other people involved in the interest of good storytelling, but she was, in the books, describing her own life. The Little House types of books are generally known as "historical fiction".

The original Little House books, written by author Laura Ingalls Wilder, were about her upbringing in a pioneer family during the late 1800s and early 1900s. NBC Television executive Ed Friendly became aware of the books in the early 1970s and asked actor/director Michael Landon to direct a pilot based loosely on the stories. Landon agreed if he was allowed to play the role of Charles Ingalls.

When the series began, some of the themes and incidences were used as basis for stories, but many new characters were added and most of the story themes themselves were not in the original books.

The pilot aired March 30, 1974. The original series ran from September 11, 1974, to May 10, 1982. A spin off series Little House: A New Beginning ran for just one season.
