Actually, it is neither. In fact, the answer to this question depends on when you are watching. While its detractors (those who dislike it) want to say it is totally liberal, that is not accurate. MSNBC is actually two stations-- during the day, it is quite different from how it is during the evening. MSNBC's "dayside" programming tends to be neutral and news-oriented, with little commentary. The network relies on the reporting staff of its parent, NBC, and focuses mainly on the big news stories. Its guest "experts" are evenly divided between liberals and conservatives, and its program hosts are either neutral or moderate conservatives. And MSNBC's highly-rated morning show, "Morning Joe" is hosted by a former Republican member of congress, Joe Scarborough.
But at night, from Monday through Friday, and on weekend mornings, MSNBC is definitely liberal/progressive, and tries to be the liberal answer to the Republican/conservative FoxNews. At night, MSNBC has political commentators (currently, these are Al Sharpton, Ed Schultz, Rachel Maddow, and Lawrence O'Donnell). This evening format, which was first advanced by Keith Olbermann (who is no longer on MSNBC), has proven very successful for the network. While it does not get the ratings of FoxNews, it has carved out a very successful niche for liberals and moderates who want to hear commentators expressing those perspectives.
