First, you need to know what is a public good.A public good is by definition something non-rival and non-excludable.Non-roval means that somebody can have the good and you can have it at the same time.Non-excludable means nobody can deny you the access to the good. That said, we can say that National Defense is a public good if we consider it only provides deterrence from another attack. That because everybody can profit of the deterrence at the same time and because no other citizen can deny you the protection offered by the national defense.Voilà!
National defense is a public good, meaning it must be supplied to all citizens. It functions to protect all citizens within a country from threats coming in from without. It is the first and most important function granted to the national government. Without national defense a country cannot defend itself from foreign threats and would fail as a state.
There are many public goods available to people. Some examples of these are clean air, knowledge, light houses, and national security.
Well not really they are ranked 128th place in the world so their defense is not good
Social Security & Medicare; Customs & Immigration; Military (National Defense) & Coast Guard (Rescue Missions); to name a few.
why is the opinion of the public about a popular movie or television program not a good example of public opinion?
by sharing or teaching my martial arts skill, for self defense..set as a good example to all..maintain peace and order and prevent and control crime..
Free riding is a problem encountered with public goods. (Public goods are those goods which are considered to be (mostly) non-rival and non-excludeable. That is, one person's consumption of the good doesn't "use up" the good, and it is very hard, expensive or impossible to keep someone from consuming the goods. A common example is national defense. Many environmental goods are, at least in part, public goods.) A free rider is someone who consumes a public good (because their consumption is non-excludeable) without paying for it. In fact, from the point of view of the individual consumer, it is rational to consider free riding, as long as others are willing to buy enough of the public good to satisfy your needs. For example, Bill Gates might have more to lose were the United States invaded, so he might be willing to pay enough for national defense to satisfy the needs of a hobo in Hoboken. However, from a societal standpoint, it is optimal to have everyone who wants to use the public good split the cost. Usually, the only way to accomplish this is through mandatory taxation, which is why most public goods are provided by the government and not private enterprise.
