∙ 11y agoJust barely. The president came from a working-class family and went to college thanks to grants, scholarships, and student loans. After college, his legal work was mainly advocacy for the poor and college teaching, neither of which were very lucrative. His rise in politics also did not immediately make him wealthy. In fact, he did not begin doing well financially until about 2005-2006, according to Money magazine (I enclose the link). After a very well-received speech in 2004 at the Democratic National Convention, he started getting more high-profile speaking engagements. Another major boost to his income came from two successful best-selling books, giving him a lot of royalties. In 2006, he had a net worth of $1.3 million.
