Is Punk a lifestyle or a music genre?

it's a music genre, and a label given to certain people In the early 70's, people who were disillusioned with contemporary music and discovered they could make they're own music for themselves and others like them ( whether they had any musical training or proper instruments or new anything about writing songs or not) were given the label 'punk'. The next wave of bands that formed after seeing and hearing these musicians were self-consciously 'punk' and described themselves as such. So while originally 'Punk' was a term used to describe a certain attitude (aggresive, nihilistic, Do-it-yourself, anything goes, offensive, open-minded, satirical, humourous, politically militant) it quickly came to describe and narrowly define a genre of music. ---- I abore that above answer....It is both. You can choose to live it, as a culture, or you can enjoy it as it's face value, a contribution to music. Either way you look at it, it comes down to personal choice. Only the less fortunate of us use lables as a way of breeding us out of society.
