Symbols of the Republican Party
Of the two major political parties in America, the Republican Party, is generally known as the conservative party in the United States. Originally founded prior to the Civil W…ar in 1854, the Republican Party became known for anti-slavery ethics. The party would later rise to power and prominence as President Abraham Lincoln took office from 1861-1865. Over the years the party's platform has evolved to encompass a wide variety of principles, though they still remain largely conservative in nature. While the party has now established itself as a major power in mainstream politics with hot political stars like Sarah Palin and Marco Rubio, there are some questions that people have regarding symbols of the party that have nothing to do with politics. The color red, the term GOP, and the Elephant are a major part of the party with strong meanings. In a classic battle of Red versus Blue, the Republican Party also known as the Grand Old Party touts the iconic red color. But it was not always so, there are many Americans that still remember elections of the 20th century where both Republicans and Democrats have been marked by red and blue. From the European tradition, red denoted a left leaning, or liberal leaning, individual or region. From as early as 1888, blue was a color used to indicate the Republican party. It wasn't until recent years and intense media coverage that things have changed. With elections broadcast on TV, and the media's need to indicate states in which a majority of people voted one way or another, red was settled on as the color for the Republicans during the 2000 election. The common logic for this decision was that red and Republican both begin with the letter "R." The Republican Party has not officially adopted the color red, though it has come to be widely associated with the party. In modern American political discourse, sometimes the acronym GOP is thrown around. The GOP Stands for the Grand Old Party, and is another name for the Republican Party. This term was first coined in 1875 in association with the defense of the Union as "this gallant old party." Shortly after, the term was changed to "Grand Old Party." Since then GOP has been a nickname for the Republicans and is part of the party's tradition. The use of both the elephant as a Republican logo and the Donkey as the Democrat logo came from a political cartoon by Thomas Nash, published in Harper's Weekly on November 7, 1874. The comic depicted the democrats as a donkey wearing a lion's skin trying to scare a Republican elephant. Since then, both parties have adopted their respective symbols as their own, stating that the donkey is smart and brave, while the elephant is strong and dignified. Republicans haven't always used the elephant as their symbol. In fact, in some states in the Midwestern region of the United States, the Republicans used the bald eagle as their symbol during the early 20th century. The modern symbol of the Republican Party is an elephant with a white stripe separating a blue upper body with three stars, and a red lower body and trunk. The three stars, however, are a source of controversy and debate. Generally, the number three is associated with perfection, and divinity, being the number of the godhead in traditional Christian belief. Taken in this light, the three stars call back to early Christian tradition and the moral foundation of the Republican Party. Since the year 2000 the stars have been inverted, leading many critics to cry that the symbol has become a "Satanist" logo. The reason for this is because the inverted pentagram with the point downwards, or upside down star, represents man worshipping the devil instead of God. Another more innocent reason for the inverted stars is that inverted stars were originally found on early versions of the American flag. In this light, the inverted stars represent the history of the United States and the long tradition of the party. The Republican Party comes has a long tradition. The GOP and the elephant are synonymous with the party, just as those symbols represent conservative politics in America. Though the party is different from the original foundation, it holds onto many traditions and symbols. Even afterthe loss in the 2012 election, the Republicans still hold a solid footing in the political landscape of the United States and will no doubt continue to influence American politics for years to come. Both the Republican Elephant and the Democratic Donkey came from the same place. In a political comic published in 1874, a donkey wearing a lion skin tried to scare an elephant. Since then, both parties have used the symbols to represent their parties. (MORE)

Top Quotes People Can't Believe Sarah Palin Said
When Sarah Palin was chosen as John McCain's running mate, a lot of Republicans were initially pleased with his choice because she shared many of their beliefs. She had one of… the highest approval ratings of any governor in the country. However, it soon became clear that Palin was not informed, not articulate, and potentially damaging to the McCain campaign and the Republican Party, especially after the Charlie Gibson interview. Here are some of Palin's most unbelievable quotes. Her comment was made during a fundraiser in North Carolina. Her reasoning was that her aides had told her not to watch the news because it would make her depressed. Any competent candidate running for office knows they should be up to speed on the news and breaking events, especially when they're making public appearances. Her overly optimistic attitude over serious issues was damaging to the campaign.Palin was questioned by James Dobson about whether a drop in the polls was discouraging. Her response was that the "prayer warriors" all across the country accounted for more than the vote of the average American, insinuating that God chooses the president. She apparently was of the opinion that God would do what was right for the country, so votes didn't matter that much and she wouldn't get discouraged by a lower approval rating. At a fundraising event, Palin insinuated that only small towns or what she referred to as little pockets of America, are where the real patriotic Americans live. She apologized later on for the comment, but it caused problems in a country that was already very much divided on the issues. To think that a person who was running for Vice President of the United State didn't actually know what the job entails is very distressing. She was asked by an elementary school child what the vice president does and she told the class that the vice president can get in there and make a lot of policy changes to help people. She was obviously ignorant of the checks and balances system. When questioned about the Troopergate scandal, Palin happily announced that she was pleased to be cleared of any wrongdoing or anything unethical. She was never cleared of anything. Not only did she lie about any wrongdoing, but she was obviously in denial about her role in the scandal. One of her comments, regarding Obama "palling around with terrorists," is probably the most damaging comment she's ever made. Her comment wasn't accurate and it was probably the one thing she said that was the most damaging to John McCain's presidential campaign.Again when Palin was campaigning in North Carolina, she thanked God that the numbers in the McCain campaign had gone up a few digits. However, at the same time, Obama had the highest numbers in the polls he'd had since he started campaigning. However, Palin didn't have any comment on the Obama lead. When Palin commented on Sen. Joe Biden's wife's career in education at the vice presidential debate, she said that her reward was in heaven and not on earth, which would probably be news to the millions of teachers in the country who reap the rewards of teaching children each day.Another of the most damaging interviews Palin gave was when Katie Couric asked which publications she reads that established her world view. Couric specifically asked which newspapers and magazines she read to stay informed and understand the world. Palin couldn't name even one source. Her only response was that she read them with a respect for the press, for the media. When Couric asked her again, she said all the ones that have been in front of her. When Palin and Katie Couric discussed people who are gay, Palin's comment about a gay friend caused controversy when equated being gay with being a lifestyle choice. Medical associations contend that being gay is biological and not a lifestyle choice. Palin didn't endear herself to the LGBT community by saying that it wasn't a choice she made, but she wasn't judging anyone.Palin's lack of knowledge about the economy was also disturbing to a lot of people. When she was asked which policies of the McCain-Palin campaign would be hurt by the economic crisis, at first she didn't comment, but then cited the fact that she'd only been campaigning for five weeks as her reason for not providing a concrete answer. 8 Ways Sarah Palin Sets Herself Up For Criticism From Liberals On Her New TV Channel
Sarah Palin, ex-governor of the State of Alaska and former vice presidential candidate on the Republican 2008 ticket, has been a controversial figure in politics since her fir…st appearance in the media. The recent announcement of her own Internet TV channel has given liberals across the country more fodder against of this unique political personage. Her new show has already made her a target for a number of criticisms:The ex-governor makes continuous mention of the need to impeach President Obama, as well as the pressing misuse of his authority. Unfortunately, President Obama's actions do not reach the level of impeachable offenses.Palin's use of a prominent "debt clock" on her Internet TV site shows her dedication to using classic right wing fear-mongering techniques to persuade the public to her viewpoint. The debt clock method has been used successfully to help impose cuts on programs for the poor, stop extensions of benefits for the unemployed and prevent the implementation of a jobs program. The Internet TV site includes a blog from Palin's daughter, Bristol, who became a celebrity during her mother's campaign for being unmarried and pregnant. Bristol has no qualifications to comment on current political situations other than being her mother's daughter. Nonetheless, she continues to make a living off her mother's notoriety.Liberals contend that the more Sarah Palin is in the public eye, the more discredited her run for vice president, and in fact, her fitness for any office, becomes. On her Internet TV channel, she constantly runs back to creationist, evangelical commentary for interpretation of any issue.Liberals not that not only is this a childish gimmick; it is at odds with Palin's expressed hopes for impeachment. Time is running out, and neither the Republican Party, nor the public, has shown any real interest in hurrying toward an impeachment proceeding. On the website, Palin takes particular jabs at Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and possible presidential hopeful. However, Palin in no way is up to Warren's intellectual standard, and even the running commentary against a video of Warren's speech seems childish and inconsequential.Although she only commands interest from a small and a rabid group of supporters, liberals note the Palin continues to "cash in" on that interest to make a comfy living and dangle the possibility of a run for the presidency.Although Palin purports to be concerned with the American people and their problems, all her public efforts have a decidedly self-serving quality that makes her appearances clearly all about her, her family, her life and her financial well being. Sarah Siddons, the Greatest Tragic Actress in Great Britain
Sarah Siddons was a British actress during the late Georgian era and the most famous tragedian of her time. As she came from a family of actors, it was only natural that she p…ursue the same career. From playing Isabella in "Fatal Marriage" to the most impressive performance of her lifetime in the role of Lady Macbeth, she gave unique performances and became known as the Queen of Tragedy.Born Sarah Kemble on July 5, 1755 in Brecon, Wales, she was the oldest of the 12 children of Roger Kemble. Her father was the manager of a small traveling theater company. At a young age, she became involved with the handsome 22-year-old actor William Siddons, who was accepted in her father's company in 1767. Her parents did not approve of the relationship and sent Sarah away to work as a maid to discourage the romance. But the couple did not give up on their strong love and the family had to consent to their marriage eventually. The wedding was in 1773, after which Sarah returned to the stage as Mrs. Siddons, continuing to work for the Kemble company. The couple had seven children, out of which two died in infancy. Her first documented stage appearance was in 1766, when she played Ariel in the Tempest at the Coventry Theater with her family's company. After marrying, she moved to London where she caught the attention of David Garrick, a British actor and theater manager. He offered her a role in the Drury Lane Theater. On December 29, 1775, she made her first appearance on the London stage as Portia. She did not impress as an actress, which is why she did not obtain a re-engagement. She left London in 1776 and spent the next few years in provincial cities. In 1778, she was working at the Theater Royal in Bath, where she managed to make a favorable impression and drew the attention of the new manager at the Drury Lane Theater, Richard Brinsley Sheridan, who invited her back to London. She returned in 1782 and was given the role of Isabella in the drama "Fatal Marriage" on October 10. She brought her character to life like no one else had before her. Over the next years, she became known as Britain's leading actress. She was the first woman to play "Hamlet" when she was only 20 years old and she continued to play the role for another 30 years. In 1806, she and her brother, John, joined the Covent Garden Theater. Among her most successful roles was Volumnia in "Coriolanus" alongside her brother. In the summer of 1784, she toured Scotland and Ireland. She refused to take part in a benefit performance in Dublin, which irritated the Irish public, who threw tomatoes and potatoes at her during her shows. Despite the rumors, selfishness was not the real reason for the refusal. She was exhausted and had a poor health due to her constant pregnancies, miscarriages, and anxiety. This cast a dark shadow over her reputation and she even fainted on stage after she was booed for 40 minutes. She remained at the Covent Garden Theater until her final public performance in 1812. She played Lady Macbeth and managed to bring the Shakespearean character to life. She continued to give public readings and played in private performances until 1819. She died in 1831, aged 76, in her house in Upper Baker Street in London. Only three of her children outlived her. Around 5,000 people attended her funeral.A notable woman in theater history, Sarah Siddons was the greatest actress at the end of the Georgian era. In the 18th century, acting was beginning to be a respectable profession for a woman. Although her talent was not recognized at first, she struggled to improve her skills and technique until she dominated the British theater.Sarah Siddons was a painted by Thomas Gainsborough, the famous English portrait artist, in 1785. The portrait is exhibited at the National Gallery in London. There is even a white marble statue of the actress in the Westminster Abbey. (MORE)
