No, Columbia Southern University (CSU) is an accredited member of the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC). The Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC) is listed by the United States Department of Education as a nationally-recognized accrediting agency, and is a recognized member of the Council of Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).

As an accredited, degree-granting member of the DETC, CSU is also an institutional member of the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). CHEA is a non-profit organization serving as the national advocate for self-regulation through accreditation. Institutional membership is limited to nationally or regionally accredited colleges or universities.

The Higher Education Transfer Alliance (HETA) is a voluntary group of accredited institutions that are concerned with the importance of student mobility, enhancing success in transfer of credit, and affirming the responsibility and prerogative of individual institutions with respect to acceptance of transfer credits. HETA is a Web-based directory of colleges and universities that is open to all institutions that are accredited by an organization recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or the United States Department of Education (USDE). Membership in HETA is entirely voluntary. HETA is not intended to and will not constrain institutional freedom or prerogatives with respect to acceptance of transfer credit.

Answer 1: Yes, according to their website Columbia Southern University is accredited. It is always a good idea, before accepting admissions at any University, to make sure they are accredited.

Answer 2: To the first answerer I respond, "yes, but, fortheloveofgod, don't believe what any school says on its own website about it! Degree/diploma mill websites lie about it every single day!"

The quick and short answer to the question is "yes, Coumbia Southern University is accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC), which is a "national" accreditor, approved by the US Department of Education (USDE), and the USDE-sanctioned Council for Higher Educational Accreditation (CHEA)."

It is not, however, "regionally" accredited, by one of the six big USDE- and CHEA-approved "regional" accreditors; which "regional" accreditation many argue is superior to "national" accreditation. The jury's still out on that, as far as I'm concerned; but I will concede that there is a definite prejudice against "national" accreditation in the minds of some employers, colleges/universities, and governmental agencies. And so, if one wants to ensure that his/her degree will positively be accepted by everyone, then one should probably stick with only schools that are "regionally" (and not "nationally") accredited.

The only reliable way, in any case, to determin whether a school is accredited is not to look on the school's website. Again, if it's a degree mill, then it will most assuredly lie; it might even create its own fake accreditor, build an impressive-looking website for it, and then claim to be accredited by it.

Never believe what a school's website says about its own accreditation.

Always, always, always independently verify! Always!

And the fastest way to do that is to interrogate the USDE and/or CHEA websites. They both have look-up systems where one may look-up a given school and see, in just seconds, if it's accredited. If the school's not in at least one of those two databases, then it's not accredited, no matter what it claims on its website!

I've placed links to both the USDE and CHEA databases down in the "sources and related links" section of this web page. Any time you want to know if a post-secondary school is accredited, just look it up in either or both of those databases. It seriously only takes seconds!

Answer 1: Columbia Southern University (CSU) is not "regionally" accredited. However, it is still accredited by an agency approved by the US Department of Education (USDE), and the USDE-sanctioned Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), just as all six of the big US "regional" accreditors are approved. The kind of accreditation CSU has is called "national" accreditation; and, believe me, it's just as good as "regional" accreditation... it's just not really perceived that way by some.

CSU, then, is not in any way substandard. However, there is most definitely an opinion among many employers, other colleges/universities, and even some government agencies, that "regional" accreditation is inherently better than "national" accreditation. Never mind that CHEA, itself, has what's called its "Higher Education Transfer Alliance" (HETA) program which argues that all accreditation, as long as it's USDE- and/or CHEA-approved, should be treated equally; and that all accredited transfer credits and degrees should be accepted by employers, colleges/universities and government agencies, whether "regionally" or "nationally" accredited.

Consequently, like it or not, a CSU academic credential may not be accepted by some employers, or by some colleges/universities, or by some governmental agencies. And its credits may not be as transferable as accreditation is supposed to ensure. It's tragic, actually; and it's all the fault of the regional accreditors that have so propagandized about "regional" accreditation's alleged superiority for so many years. Shame on the lot of them! Thank goodness many, many "regionally" accredited schools belong to HETA, and so will accept such as CSU's transfer credits; or its finished degrees as requisite for entry into higher-level degree programs.

I, personally, would never be afraid to get a CSU degree because I know how to disabuse an employer, or a college's/university, or a governmental agency of its ignorance and arrogance regarding "regional" versus "national" accreditation. But most others don't have my kind of expertise or ability to use it to convince (so doing is part of what I do for a living), and so I can't, in good faith and conscience, recommend to everyone that they get a "nationally" accredited certificate, diploma or degree. For some, it could be perfect; but for many, it could be a mistake. The sadly safest thing for most people is to just stick with "regionally" accredited colleges and universities.

And that's sad, really, because through it all, CSU's a perfectly fine little school.

At present the institution does not have a regional accreditation, and whether the school is intending to seek this accreditation does not mean it will achieve its goal. I would be very cautious if you are planning to attend this university. In addition, if you are not attending the university at the time it achieves a regional accreditation, it will have no affect on you, seeing that you attended the school before it received the accreditation. It would be nice if the school gets that accreditation, but right now it does not have it, and personally I would not take the chance.
