Its very simple logic.
Kannada & Telugu script were derived from Kadamba script, which has more resemblance to Kannada than Telugu. So, Kannada script should be older.

Telugu, Kannada and Tamil are equally old. Kannada and Tamil greatly influenced by Sanksrit and Telugu was influence by Prakrit. Prakrit was a natural language and oldest inscriptions are found in Prakrit language and Sanskrit took over and became administrative language. In 458AD old Kannada became first administrative language of Karnata (which uses kadamba script aka old-kannada script) and next was Telugu became second administrative language of Trilanga Desha and in the 7th century Tamil kings followed neighbors and it became third administrative language in the tamil country.
