There is a North American Theological Seminary that was opened in 1957. This seminary was later renamed to Baptist Missionary Association Theological Seminary.

There is a new seminary that is often mislabeled the same name, but is actually called "The North American Reformed Seminary."

The North American Reformed Seminary is a completely free online Reformed seminary...

And it is legitimate, with some solid endorsements...but it is not accredited.

Yes, it is a legitimate seminary, and holds the appropriate accreditation. The United Theological Seminary is accredited by the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada, the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, and the Ohio Board of Regents.

CTS is a legitimate school as degrees are earned through disciplined personal study to meet academic requirements. Mentoring professors lead students through syllabus-based learning that includes significant reading, research and writing (on the graduate level--I can't speak for undergraduate). This is not a diploma mill! I earned a DMin. degree at CTS and found the coursework to be intellectually stimulating and the content material to have both theoretical and practical value. The reading, research and writing requirements are comparable to what I've experienced at several fully accredited graduate-level programs (I have two fully-accredited master's degrees). My mentor holds three doctorates and is a published expert in her field of specialty. She gave me helpful suggestions on preparing some of my writing for publication. The attitude is flexible and encouraging, and the online format is user-friendly.

While Trinity currently lacks accreditation recognized by CHEA or the US DOE, there are many accredited seminaries that will accept their undergraduate and graduate degrees.

In short, yes, they are legitimate, as far as quality of education is concerned.

Never heard of them before, but I'm looking at their website now and ... it's not looking good.

Not Looking Good #1: A lot of the links to their degree programs don't appear to work. For an online school, this is a big red warning flag with spotlights shining on it and fireworks going off above; you'd expect that a school that is able to successfully deliver online education would NOT have basic links on the home page of their website giving 404 errors. ("Payment Options", now, THAT link works.)

Not Looking Good #2: I don't see any mention of accreditation. There are some highly regarded seminaries that have, for one reason or other, chosen not to pursue accreditation through ATS and/or regional accrediting bodies ... but the best ones will usually be more than willing to discuss their reasoning with prospective students and explain why they're not accredited. I'd give them a call and let them explain it before rejecting them out of hand, but I'd also contact some potential employers and/or graduate schools and ask them flat out whether they'd consider a degree from an unaccredited school in general and from Logos in particular to be sufficient for employment/admission. A "degree" that nobody accepts isn't much of a degree.

It is legitimate...it is just not regionally accredited. If you plan to teach or be a professor or to transfer to an accredited school, this will be a problem. Otherwise, it will not be.

How can one ensure that NFL shirts are legitimate?

One can ensure that NFL shirts are legitimate by looking for grey or silver piping that says NFL Equipment on the inside of the shoulder seams, Reebok logos embroidered on the sleeves, and zig-zag stitching on numbers and names.
