No. It was newly-created out of Virginia, and it became one of the Border States, i.e. a slave-state that declared for the Union. However, there was never much slavery in mountain country like West Virginia.

Yes it was a part of the Union however the citizens served the Union and the Confederacy in almost equal numbers and guerrilla warfare was a major concern. Those on the side of the Union were termed Snake Hunters and those serving the Confederate cause were called Moccasin Rangers.

West Va. Stayed with the Union ,they are a Northern State Yankees,although some did fight for the just cause it was still a Union state, the North don't like the idfea they have hillbillys for cousins, but, so be it ,they are Yankees

The western portion of Virginia did not wish to secede from the Union in 1861 and broke away to form its own state, joining the Union on June 20, 1863, as a free state, and the 35th state.
