Lieutenant Colonel (LTC) is a higher rank than 1st Lieutenant (1LT). LTC is a fairly senior rank, while 1LT is a junior officer. In the US Army, (commissioned) officer ranks from lowest to highest are:

Second Lieutenant

First Lieutenant

Captain

Major

Lieutenant Colonel

Colonel

Brigadier General

Major General

Lieutenant General

General

General of the Army (AKA "five star general" - this rank was only awarded to WWII era generals like MacArthur and Eisenhower)

In the US Army, junior officers (Second Lieutenant - Captain) are referred to as company grade officers, while Majors-Colonels are referred to as field grade. General officers are also known as "flag officers" because they're entitled to fly a personal flag with their rank insignia on it.

Which is higher rank in US ARMYColonel vs major rank?

It depends which country and branch of service one is speaking of. The American military does not have the rank of Major-Colonel, the ranks of Major, Lt. Colonel and Colonel all out rank a Captain, unless the Captain is Navy or Coast Guard, then he would be equal in rank to the Colonel. In US Military, in all but the Navy, the order of these three ranks from lowest to highest is: * Captain * Major * Lieutentant Colonel * Colonel A Captiain in the Navy is the equivalent in rank of a Colonel in the Army, USAF or USMC

What is a higher rank in the Army a Major or Colonel?

This is filed under US ARmy and US Navy, so let me clarify.. A Captain in the Army is pay grade O3, whereas a Colonel in the Army is pay grade O6. Colonel is the higher of the two. The Navy has a different rank structure for officers than the other branches. A Captain in the Navy is 06 - equivalent to Colonel. The rank of Colonel does not exist in the Navy.

Colonel is higher ranking (O-6) than Major (O-4) in the Marines, Army, and Air Force. The comparable ranks in the Navy (and Coast Guard) are Captain (O-6) and Lieutenant Commander (O-4).

Which is of higher rank a General or a colonel?

General. But I've heard of people calling major generals "general" out of respect. As in if they have 2 or 3 disignations, always refer to the highest. Wouldn't want to call a major general "major."

Technically, all officers are of a higher rank than any sergeant. Sergeant Major however, is a very high enlisted rank. A sergeant major will usually only take commands from a Lieutenant Colonel or higher.
