It depends on how severely impaired the mother is. If she is only mildly affected by schizophrenia, then she may be able to take care of her children- for example, if she has infrequent hallucinations or magical thinking but no delusions, and few negative symptoms. However, if she has more severe symptoms, especially delusions relating to her children, then she may not be able to take care of her children.

If you mean transmitting schizophrenia to the daughter because the daughter is close to her, then that is not possible.

There are two causes of schizophrenia: biological and environmental. The first means that it is caused by a genetic predisposition towards schizophrenia. Scientists aren't sure what the gene is, or if there's more than one, but relatives of people with schizophrenia have a much higher rate of schizophrenia and related disorders than most people. This could be what you are talking about. Genes are passed on from the parent to the child.

Environmental means that there is no genetic reason why the person would have schizophrenia. This accounts for the majority of cases. However, it does not mean that it can be because of being around someone with schizophrenia.

Is it unusual to have at least one person with schizophrenia in each of three generations of a family?

Schizophrenia may be rare, but when it is encountered, it is usually diagnosed to multiple people in the same family. It can skip generations. My grandmother was schizophrenic, my mother was not, and I am. Sometimes it is seen in multiple people in a family from the same generation, sometimes it isn't even diagnosed to anyone from a certain generation.
