There is an entirely different process used in making each type of image. A lithograph is a very high quality machine printed image made by using a 4 color separation process much like how the covers of any color magazine is printed.
A Serigraph is a silk screened image. With a Serigraph the original oil painting is scanned and separated digitally into each and every color found in the original. A separate silk screen is created for each and every color that was scanned. There are usually from 80 to 130 individual colors in the majority of some Serigraphs.
Each silk screen is precisely placed over the Serigraph paper, and then by hand squeegee, paint for a specific color is applied. This single application of one paint color must then dry for at least 24 to 48 hours before the next color paint can be applied.
It can take a Serographer up to 6 months to produce 1 run of as many as 500 Serigraphs of the same image.
Serigraphs are also produced in much smaller numbers than Lithographs, and they are as costly to produce, and as close to the actual original painting as you can possibly get.
There is a very noticeable difference in the high quality of a Serigraph (technically original art) when compared to a Lithograph (reproduction).

∙ 11y agoTotally different techniques. I prefer the serigraph - which requires the artist to produces himself manually, depending on the amount of layering colors, artistry , the print can be amazing. Giclee is more of a digital printer quality of high resolution. More commercial.

Hi to whomever wrote this Q, Soon after the sale of the last Ltd edition of 150 hand-signed giclee(32"x34")by Peter Ellenshaw from the publisher, the art galleries quickly doubled the price of the giclee. It has slowly been creeping up ever since util Peter's death earlier this year(2007)when the same art galleries have bumped their asking price ne up to nearly US$9,000 for the giclee. But I guess it is up to the Gallery to set their own asking price. I think the 9,000 to 10,000 dollar range is a fair asking price considering the beauty of the work and the legend behind it. Does a Giclee or a Silk-Screen have greater value?
A silk-screen (if it were in fact a 'silk' screen, another subject to be tackled, since silk has not been in use for this process in years) has more value than any machine printed artwork or form. Since the, (let's call this what it is)..serigraph..is produced by hand mostly, with each color applied and registered, time involving to create the right color balance, which could also involve color matching/mixing and test prints to create the final print. The Serigraph process will usually include a limited smaller run, since any machine output can be any number of 'limited' prints....and is automatic. The Serigraph print will and can last for years. Since the Giclee printing or ink really has absolutely no history, except for the past years that machines have been in use(1990's) no one can really say what the outcome is in 100 years. Silk-screen/Serigraph prints and posters have a proven history since one can peruse original posters in any art museum in the world.... Therefore the value is in "Silk-Screen'
