If it's gills are not moving water anymore, it is dead. If it is shocked, either by a fresh water change or some other shock to it's system, it can lay on its side to rest or take a break. Always remember to let tap water sit in an open bowl or pot for at least 24 hours to let the chlorine in it evaporate before adding it to any tank or else that will cause them harm.

No if its laying on it's side on the bottom of the tank it means that the filters dirty and your fish has dirt in it's gills. If it's dying it would be floating on the top of the tank on it's side. But it could die if the dirt blocks it's air way in it's gills.

∙ 11y agoIf your goldfish is laying on it's side it means there's something wrong with the new tank's water(if you swicthed it to a new tank this might happen) or your fish isn't eating or your fish is dying. Trust me this has happened to me before and it was devestating to watch

∙ 14y agoThere are two things that could cause a fish to list to one side: either water quality is bad, or the fish has intestinal parasites. Check water quality, correct if needed. Do several large 50-75% water changes and start the fish on an antiparasitic medication, it also might be helpful to raise the salt concentration to 0.3%- this kills most parasites.
