Plant one seed, one plant grows. One plant flowers produces seeds and dies. I guess it is an annual.

Interestingly, there are some perennial sunflowers available, although the sunflower most of us are familiar with is annual, as described above.
Perennial sunflowers are closer to the wild sunflower than the domestic sort with the huge heads. Usually perennials are more refined flower-wise, but still very tall. Also they grow from rhizomes rather than seed. Interesting varieties are being produced by crossing the two.

Azelea is a shrub so, by definition it would be perennial. An annual is a plant you sow and flowere and harvest in the same year
