Asthma is currently recognized as a noninfectious disease. Asthma is considered a "reactive airway disease," meaning basically that the airway is reacting to some type of irritant. Asthma attacks can be triggered by many things such as allergens, cold air, or exercise. These irritants cause inflammation in the airway walls and mucus production, which can narrow the airway and make breathing difficult.

Interesting question however, as some newer data has actually supported infectious etiologies such as chlamydia as a possible underlying cause of asthma... but not proven yet.
