You shall not steal. You are getting a grade by taking your answers (or money or ..) when they are not yours to take, your neighbor (or friend or client or ..) owns that but if you take it (even if they keep the original as in answers) you are getting something for nothing by using someone else. And yes, even if they are not physically hurt, there is damage as the bell curve can be blown (and they get a lower grade because of you) or they don't enjoy all the fruits of their labor (money, attention, whatever.)

Stealing = taking something not yours to take. == == == == Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother. Mark 10:19

The general tendency is to say, "Thou shalt not commit adultery"... but in point of biblical fact, the answer is: ALL OF THEM!

"...For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is GUILTY OF ALL. For He that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill [murder]. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill [murder], thou art become a transgressor of the law." (James 2:10-11)

Plus, to take the point to its ultimate conclusion... it's not against "the Commandments" that we sin... but against our Creator.

"...Against Thee, Thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in Thy sight: that Thou mightest be justified when Thou speakest, and be clear when Thou Judgest." (Ps.51:4)

In this heartfelt prayer and plea for God's mercy for having committed adultery with Bath-sheba... David mentions nothing about his sins against his family or her family... or his premeditated part in the murder of her husband. He cries out for mercy for ALL OF HIS TRANSGRESSIONS.

Our sins are our "disobedience against our Creator"... the One whose image we bear -- not a Commandment.

"...in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience..." (Eph.2:2).

"...For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the Kingdom of Christ and of God. Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the Wrath of God upon the children of disobedience." (Eph.5:5-6)

Our transgressions of the Commandments [which is sin -- I John 3:4]... are not "against the Commandments" -- but against the One who gave them to us.

"...Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that His fear may be before your faces, THAT YE SIN NOT." (Ex.20:20)

Yes, John 4:24 tells us that to be approved by God, we must worship him with truth and Proverbs 11:1 says: "The Lord detests dishonest scales, but accurate weights find favor with him."(NIV). At Hebrews 13:18 we learn that God expects his worshipers to '...have a good conscience, in all things willing to live honestly"(KJV) (Revelation 14:5).Cheating is another form of stealing, taking something that is NOT yours, and this is something detestable to God. (Ephesians 4:28/Proverbs 10:4/1 Corinthians 6:10). Even if people do not see a person cheating, God does (Hebrews 4:13), and to him, a 'liar' is considered to be as bad as a murderer (Revelation 22:15). Instead, we should ALWAYS 'speak truth' (Ephesians 4:25)(Proverbs 15:1+2)(Proverbs 12:19).

Is cheating a venial sin?

The question is ambiguous. Cheating on what? Tic-tac-toe? The bar exam? Your wife? This would affect the gravity of the sin. Cheating on your wife is Adultery. It is clearly against the Commandment. It is ALWAYS a Mortal Sin. In the other types of cheating mentioned, gravity of the sin is relational to the gravity of the act. I would say that cheating on an important test is a Mortal Sin.

Why is it important to follow the fifth commandment?

we keep the fifth commandment by preserving our own life and health by respecting our neighbor's right to life and health of body and soul. the seriousness of such sins is determined by the seriousness of the harm done to our neighbor. deliberately to wish a serious evil to another, to cooperate with him in a serious sin, to give serious scandal or to talk or act against our neighbor in such a way as to injure him seriously is a mortal sin against the fifth commandment.

Is cheating on a test sinning?

It depends on your religion. If you are Buddhist or Atheist , then its not really a sin for you. Its not sin for the Islamic religion but you really shouldn't cheat though. But it is a sin if your Catholic or a Christian. I am a Catholic myself. Cheating and Stealing is wrong, therefore it is a sin.

Is killing parrots a sin?

Roman Catholic AnswerSin is "any thought, word or deed against the law of God" (St. Augustine). I know of no commandment of God that would forbid you from killing a parrot, although your motivation would have to be taken into account. That could make it a sin.
