Hmmm, never thought of it that way. There are some stuffed shirts who will tell you that it is a science, but it isn't really. It's really a mixture of art, science, and plain old common sense and instinct.

I would say that it is science, as in: The scientific study of criminals and crime.

Another View: Criminology involves scientific investigation, deductive reasoning, and the skill to interact with other people. So it is probably best described as a combination of the two with some of the Social Sciences thrown in.

Officially, criminology is a science. However, the fact that crime is constantly evolving means that criminologists must continuously study it and develop theories and solutions. Thus, there will never be one constant answer as to why certain crimes are more popular with certain groups; or why certain groups in society are more prone to victimization than others. Theories in criminology derive from one's own interpretation of the given data. This is why criminology could be seen as an art.
