When searching for potential colleges and universities, many students look for an "official" list of best schools. Unfortunately, most rating systems consider factors unimpor…tant to most students, such as alumni giving rate, faculty resources, and evaluation by the school's competitors. Students should go beyond the rankings to find the best engineering programs for their own academic goals.Accreditation means a university has demonstrated that its programs meet a level of quality by satisfying certain standards. Not all engineering programs are accredited. Often, graduation from an accredited engineering program is a requirement for licensure, certification, and employment. Students want to find programs accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Committee (EAC)/American Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), and you can use the [ABET Accredited Program Search](http://main.abet.org/aps/Accreditedprogramsearch.aspx) to determine if the program at a particular college has met the standards for accreditation.Colleges offer different levels of specialization, and not every school offers every major. The student who wants to major in petroleum engineering may not be satisfied with a college that only offers a general engineering degree. Look for colleges that will allow you to focus on the type of engineering you want to study. Most universities offer opportunities for hands-on learning, research, and internships, but not all colleges encourage students to gain experience and exposure in the same way. Some students are highly motivated and will seek out opportunities independently. Other students may not look for research or internship openings unless required to do so. If you are likely to sit back and wait for opportunities, you may want an engineering program that requires more research or internships. Look for engineering programs where you will gain the most experience and exposure, both traits employers and graduate programs desire.Selecting an engineering program involves finding a college that is a good fit for each student. Location is one factor students should evaluate. Some students want to stay close to home or take advantage of in-state tuition at public universities. Others want to experience college life in another part of the country. Certain locations may allow for more internships or employment opportunities. Location decisions may be based on personal preferences or the needs of a particular family. The perfect major, great opportunities for exposure, and a perfect location won't add up to the best undergraduate engineering program if a student can't afford to complete the degree. Unfortunately, each year students are forced to leave prestigious universities because they can no longer afford the cost. Students need to weigh realistic criteria such as affordability in their college selection process.Colleges and universities keep track of where their students go after graduation. Students interested in engineering at a particular university should ask about employment rates and graduate school acceptance rates for the most recent graduating class. Where are the engineering graduates six months after graduation? What are the top five employers of that college's engineering graduates?Thousands of American colleges and universities offer degrees in engineering. There are numerous lists of top colleges, but to find the best undergraduate engineering program, you need to consider your own personal interests and career goals. (MORE)

Car shoppers will notice something different today as they explore the many new models offered. New diesel-powered models are available for sale, passenger vehicles that featu…re the latest in diesel technology -- polluting less while still offering superior fuel economy.Today's gasoline engines are more fuel efficient and are closing the performance and fuel mileage gap with diesels. Federal tax credits for diesels came to an end on Dec. 31, 2010, eliminating an important buying incentive.Dirty diesels are quickly becoming a thing of the past as new fuels and new engines ensure that sulfur content is kept to a minimum. Beginning in 2007, ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) became available and by the end of 2010 it has been the only diesel fuel available for passenger vehicles.ULSD is important as it contains just 15 parts per million or less of sulfur. Sulfur dioxide is generated from the sulfur found in diesel fuel, a contaminant that can contribute to breathing problems for asthmatic children and adults that are active outdoors according to the [Clean Air Trust](http://www.cleanairtrust.org/sulfurdioxide.html). The new fuel reduces this harmful pollutant by 97 percent over the previously available diesel fuel. This also means that diesel cars run just as cleanly as gasoline-powered models. In addition to the new fuel, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has required car manufacturers to design new diesel engines. The current crop of diesels are quieter, cleaner and perform better. Moreover, these engines are 50-state compliant which means that they're approved for sale in states such as California with the toughest anti-pollution laws on the books.Car manufacturers have essentially reinvented the diesel engine by bringing in direct injection, fuel injectors, common rail fuel distribution and other technologies. Direct injection means fuel is injected directly into the cylinder, eliminating engine knock, delivering more power and increasing fuel efficiency. Some manufacturers have taken the new technologies further by installing two-stage turbochargers, by reducing the compression ratio and in removing excess weight. Improvements in injection technology has enabled [Mazda](http://www.mazda.com/mazdaspirit/skyactiv/engine/skyactiv-d.html) to deliver new diesel engines that run better and can still start up on cold mornings.Take two engines of similar size -- one a diesel and the other designed for gasoline consumption -- and the diesel is about 30 to 35 percent more fuel efficient. The diesel design is what gives these engines a fuel economy edge as such engines makes use of the compression heat to begin ignition that burns the fuel injected into the combustion chamber. Gasoline engines require a spark plug to ignite the air-fuel mixture. Diesels also operate at a much higher compression ratio and deliver more torque at lower speeds, ideal when towing. One of the most striking differences between gasoline and diesel models can found the [Chevrolet Cruze](http://autos.answers.com/new-cars/5-best-diesel-cars-by-highway-mileage), a compact sedan. A Cruze outfitted with a 1.8-liter gasoline engine and paired with an automatic transmission delivers 22 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway. The Cruze diesel is rated at 27 mpg in the city and 46 mpg on the highway. That makes for a 31 percent difference in highway fuel economy.Besides the Chevrolet Cruze, car manufacturers such as the Volkswagen Group, BMW and Daimler offer diesel options. Brands include Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen, with new models coming from Jeep, Mazda and Porsche. Diesel engines are also available in heavy-duty versions of Ford, GMC, Chevrolet and Ram pickup trucks. Expect more models from more manufacturers to become available as consumer acceptance increases.New diesel-powered models are more fuel efficient, run quieter and emit far fewer pollutants than previous generation models. Diesel fuel costs more than regular grade gasoline and such models are priced higher too as are gas-electric hybrid vehicles. (MORE)

Many colleges and universities offer summer camps for high school students. Some of these programs are reserved for rising seniors, but others are open to all high school stu…dents. University summer camps can provide key opportunities that aid students in their future college plans. Most university summer camps allow students to live in the dorms, take classes in the academic buildings, eat in the cafeteria, meet professors and students, and explore the area surrounding campus. Programs provide structured schedules and adult supervision, so students are not left entirely on their own. These camps are a great opportunities for high school students to experience college life in a controlled setting.Students interested in applying to a particular college or university may find a week or two on campus as a summer camp student provides more information about the school than a simple overnight visit. Few students will have the opportunity to get to know the campus, surrounding area, and staff in the same depth. Summer camp experiences can help a student determine if this is a school she wants to add to her college application list. Many colleges and universities use specialized summer camps as a way to attract highly qualified high school students to the university program. While not all camps offer scholarships for students who decide to enroll in the university later, many do. Sometimes scholarships are offered to top students, those who win program awards, earn designations as "top students", or show the most academic promise. Other programs make scholarship offers to all students who successfully complete the program.University summer camps offer students opportunities to experience topics not typically offered in high school. Students can spend a week or more learning about film production, hospitality management, engineering, psychology, business management, veterinary medicine, fashion design, and a variety of other fields. Students who are considering these specific majors can gain more exposure to their fields of interest and either leave confident it is the right program or find the specific requirements don't actually meet his or her interests. Either way, it is an invaluable experience. Many students say they are interested in engineering, psychology, communications, forensic science, business, and medicine; yet, they have no experience in the field. Most high schools don't offer classes in these subjects, but colleges prefer to see students who have explored potential majors instead of students who have only learned about a field by watching television or reading about it online. Students who can demonstrate commitment to a particular field of study may have an advantage when it comes to college admission.Colleges want interested and motivated students. Taking time out of one's summer shows a willingness to work and an interest in developing academic and social experiences. Students who participate in university summer camps, even if they later decide they don't want to pursue the subject or don't care for the specific college, have shown on overall interest in learning.Families can find many university summer programs listed online. Application deadlines are often in the winter or early spring, so families need to plan early for students to attend these programs.Enrolling in a particular university's summer program does not guarantee a student will have a better chance of admission to that institution. Especially at highly-competitive schools, summer programs are just one of many factors they evaluate for admission. Students should go for the right reasons - to learn if a school or major is right for them, to expand knowledge of a subject, and to have fun meeting new people in a new environment. (MORE)
