Why isn't green tea green?

Green tea has a slightly bitter taste which some people enjoy while others detest. I know somebody who adds nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves, honey and lemon to it in order to make it both healthier and better tasting. I would advise you to always read the ingredients of green tea, as there are several types which include lots of artificial additives. This can make the green tea taste different and become unhealthy, while counteracting the purpose.

I did try brewing fresh cups of Green Tea but did not like the flavor no matter what I put into it. But I wanted to keep drinking it since I had read about Green Tea and all its health benefits. It's good for the heart--it supports the body's natural ability to regulate blood sugar levels. It's a great antioxidant! Green tea can also help with your weight loss efforts because of its thermogenic properties. There are other teas which have equally important health benefits such as rooibos and white tea. Color of Loose Leaf Tea:

Most, but not all green tea has a green-colored loose leaf. The color varies widely by variety. Gunpowder green tea is grayish green, whereas some green teas, such as green teas grown in India, tend to have a darker olive color. Some green teas are silvery green, others (like dragon well) more yellowish.

Color of the Liquor of a Brewed Cup of Tea:

The greenest tea, by the color of its liquor, is Matcha, a Japanese powdered tea that produces an opaque bright green cup of tea. The next "greenest" tea is Gyokuro (the same plant Matcha is made of, but made as regular tea)...this variety of tea is so green because it is shaded before harvesting, making the plants produce extra chlorophyll trying to get enough energy out of less light. Other Japanese green teas, including Sencha, Bancha, and Kukicha, also brew a fairly green color although it's more of a yellowish-green. Chinese green teas, which are pan-fired, tend to have a more golden color. Green teas from Nepal and India often brew a more brownish color. I've even seen a few green teas that brew darker in color than some black tea.

Green can also mean sustainable, or environmentally friendly. Teas, including green teas, vary widely in their impact on the environment. Although the tea plant tends to not have a major problems with pests, some pesticides are sprayed on the tea plant in some areas. And many teas are produced using chemical fertilizers which can damage the environment downstream and degrade the soil. Organic tea attempts to alleviate these problems. Some tea gardens, including the Makaibari estate in Darjeeling, have gone farther, practicing biodynamic agriculture. Makaibari estate leaves 70% of its land area as intact rainforest, and grows tea only on a small portion of the land. The forest acts as a buffer, protecting the tea against pests, and also harbors birds and other predators that act as natural pest control. Teas from such tea gardens are probably the most "green" a tea can get (although, admittedly, the only green tea I've tried from Makaibari estate was not quite as green in color as the Japanese green teas).

Green tea and black tea are made out of the same leaves, from the same plant: Camellia Sinensis.

Tea leaves destined to become black tea are left out to dry in the sun, where the leaves ferment, creating the black tea. Tea leaves meant for green tea are rushed to be cooked, in order to destroy the enzyme that spoils/ferments the picked leaves.

Chinese style green tea is roasted, giving the "green tea" a golden color. Japanese style green tea is steamed, giving it a green color.
