Mail should always only be opened by the addressee. This is just plain common sense courtesy. However, things like known utility bills and other things that are jointly held can be opened by either spouse.

Possibly.

If the mail is addressed to both of you, then you are also entitled to open it and there is no problem. However, if it is personal or only lists her as a recipient (better defined, that you are not listed) then you should try to steer clear, just in case.

Is it legal to destroy mis-delivered mail?

Technically it is illegal to throw away mail addressed to someone else, but here's what I would do: If you ever see your mailman I'd discuss the problem with him. If not, and maybe also, I'd call the local post office and explain you are getting Mr and Mrs so and so's mail and you are trying to stop it. Until then and for a couple of weeks after you talk to them throw away advertising mail and write "RTS-MLNA-UTF" on what looks like legitimate mail. As I understand it this is Post Office abbreviation for "Return to Sender-Moved Left No Address-Unable to Forward". If it keeps coming after that I'd throw it away. Many people throw it away without trying to do anything and I've never heard of anything happening to them, but I would at least try.

What happens if you throw away mail that belongs to someone else?

Separate Coupons From Junk Mail?

When you get a Verizon coupon in the mail, you need to set it aside. Many people have drawers that are used only for coupons. This will help to keep it away from your junk mail. The two things may appear to be quite similar. You need to keep them apart so that you do not throw away the Verizon coupon when you throw away the junk mail. If you do this, it will be just like you are throwing away free money that someone else was willing to give you. You need to save them until you use them.

What do I do with postal mail for people that moved from the apartment complex I manage and did not leave forwarding addresses?

Give it back to the mailman. It is illegal for you to open it or to throw it away. It is a federal crime. Just endorse the mail with the word moved on the front and return to mailman. Or just return to mailman and let him know that the person moved and to please make sure that there mail is not delivered to your address anymore.
