Best Answer

Often, yes. Grinding or milling--or even rolling--exposes the starch granules and breaks the protein matrix in the starch component of the corn grain making it much easier for the rumen microbes to digest and obtain nutrients from. However, grinding corn too fine can reduce palatability and chewing time, and thus reduce its effectivity as a good high-energy feed source.

Do you need to grind corn to feed a cow?

No, but it does make it easier for the microbes in the cow's rumen to break down and digest. Processed corn--corn which is rolled, ground or crushed--breaks the lignin comprising the skin of the corn kernel and breaks the protein matrix surrounding the starch granules. All of this make the nutrients in the kernel much easier for the ruminal bacteria to access, break down and use for their own nutritive needs before it goes to the cow.

How do you make corn flour for tortilla chips?

1) Grow the corn. 2) Dry the corn. 3) Grind the corn into flour. Step 3 is obviously the tough one. If you are using a grindstone, or industrial equipment, you should remove the kernels from the corn before you grind it. If not, leave the kernels on, and run them up and down a stone surface to get a coarse grind, and use a mortar and pestle for a finer grind.

Why are windmills needed?

Windmills are needed usually to grind corn into wheat using wind-power. The main reason of using wind-power is because to grind corn needs a huge amount of energy and it would cost more to grind the corn into wheat than the actual price of the wheat. Nowadays windmills are not used and instead other ways are use to grind corn which are more power-efficient and therefore do not need much power and so can be powered from the grid

Is it true that farmers grow corn by planting cow corn on the out side and sweet corn on the inside of the field so that people don't take the sweet corn?

Actually no.. quite on the contrary if any. If the farmer grows both cow corn and sweet corn, the way we did it was the sweet corn on the outside 3 or 4 or however many rows, and the cow corn on the inside. It made it easier to pick, and you didn't ruin any cow corn when you tried to harvest it, because the outside was sweet corn which had already been picked.Additional Info. While it is very occasionally done, as both the answer above and one of the discussion points mention, it is only done in either way (outside or inside the field) on a very small portion of the field -- for the farm family's convenience. If you want high quality sweet corn, it must be planted in a location isolated from field (cow) corn, or any other type of corn, because the other corn's pollen will make the sweet corn kernels go "starchy". The best sweet corn (and what you buy in the can or frozen) is grown in a field all by itself for this reason.
