I just went through this with my 1998 Durango, it ended up being the ignition coil. Costs about $37.99 and takes about 20 minutes to change, a very easy fix.
First you disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery then you you unhook the wiring harness, remove the serpentine belt, unbolt it, and reverse to replace. If this process is not obvious to you I suggest you take it to a shop.

This may be caused by the ignition switch.
1) disconnect negative terminal from your battery. 2) put key into ignition turn to on. 3) wait about 20 seconds, turn key off and pull out. 4) connect negative terminal. 5) start vehicle. it should reset it.
try releasing the tension on the steering wheel by turning the steering wheel left or right as you turn the ignition key
