It is always OK to defend yourself. But do not be the one to turn a verbal confrontation into a physical confrontation. If someone has insulted you, you are entitled to insult them in return. If someone hits you or attempts to hit you (since you might be able to duck) you are entitled to hit them.

I was been bullied for 3 years. Fighting back never works. No matter how mad you are, or what they said. I punched a kid once and he never got in trouble. I DID. Just because I'm bigger.

NEVER HURT ANOTHER PERSON. NO MATTER WHAT!!!

A different perspective:If he has hit you or threatened to, yes, hit him. If he squares up to you, hit him. Worst case scenario, he batters you, but at least you stood up to him. If he's bigger than you, use something to your advantage, yes, including a weapon. People don't deserve to be bullied, and they have a right to defend themselves, whatever the outcome. Still another perspective:

There are three ways to look at this. As already shared, you can refuse to fight back or run, you can stand and fight, or you can talk. If you listen to most comedians you'll find that most of them share that they were bullied when they were kids. Some of the best comedians grew up in dangerous neighborhoods, but came through it because they learned to be funny. The lesson learned from this is that funny people rarely get hit.

Funny is relative though. Witty is not. There are two ways to get the better of someone: you can physically overpower him, or you can intellectually overpower him. Bullies do what they do largely because they are compensating. Either they feel week and want to gain power by dominating a weaker person, or they are twisted and get enjoyment from it. Find out if you can what your bully is compensating for, but in both circumstances, if you out think him, you can own him. Keep him talking, but steer away from making him angry. Try to keep him thinking. Ask him questions in rapid fire; as soon as he gives one answer, be ready with another question. Keep him working his weakest member, his brain. Don't assume he is stupid, rather exercise your mind so that your's is stronger. Then use it. If he calls you a name, call him one back. Caution though, this might make him angry. If that is the direction he is headed, keep your cool, and be ready for him. Be light on your feet and if he charges, be somewhere else. Let him wear himself out.

All in all, you may take a beating if it gets physical. If it does and you cannot fight back, run. There is no shame in self-preservation, just as there is no honor in beating a weaker opponent.

Each situation is different, but if you look for the common elements, and learn to be ready for them, you can stand up for yourself, and be stronger for it.
