It would be necessary to know the person before making a reasonable evaluation. However, many teens are quite mature, disciplined and responsible, even if it doesn't seem that way sometimes, (the same can be said about many adults). A suggestion would be to allow the young person to have a "trial run" and see how it turns out. Hopefully it will be a positive and productive experience for everyone involved.

No, i wouldn't think so.

Although - are they being homeschooled as well as completing their schooling / instead.. or just developing an education?

Im 17, so i would assume the 16 year old would be in high school. From this perspective, high school is quite demanding, and i would think that it would be way too hard to study completely from home. If however, they were studying on the side (e.g. tafe), yes, it would be ok.

As above, you would have to individually evaluate the persons circumstances.

Are they going to be motivated enough to study? Not tempted to jump on MSN? What happens if they change their mind? Do they have tutoring help?

All the best :)

Is it possible for an 8th grader to homeschool herself in IL?

It must be done with a parent's permission, since the parent is the one to fill out the necessary paperwork. If an eight-grader is responsible enough to do her own assignments with very little guidance, it could be done. However, most eight-graders don't have that level of maturity.

What is the belief that laws are justified if they prevent a person from harming him- or herself known as?

Not sure if I am answering your question - but I belive you are talking about the "defense" of self-defense; which generally means you are able to use reasonable force to defend yourself from bodily harm (or death).
