Kata is a teaching method. It builds strength and muscle memory. Learning kata is the basis of learning how to apply it in a fight. The application of kata to fighting is taught through bunkai. You want to attend a school that teaches the bunkai, usually at a point about half way to black belt. But you have to be able to do the kata without thinking about it.

To quote my friend, Lawrence Kane, a prominant author of martial arts books, "Kata without doing the bunkai is just dancing in your jammies."
