As with many things, mental illnesses CAN run in the family, but that does not mean that it will.

Further information:

Because the brain is a physical organ just like the heart, lungs, stomach and any other organ in the body, it can be injured or become ill like the other organs. In the same way that an injury, tumor or illness in the lung can cause breathing problems, an injury, a tumor or illness in the brain can cause mental problems such as hallucinations or other symptoms. A chemical imbalance can cause anxiety or depression; this is why so many people who suffer from depression find relief through medication that resolves the chemical imbalance.

In the same way that SOME Heart disease runs in families, SOME mental illness tends to run in families. Just as some members of a particular family will develop heart disease while other family members remain healthy, some members of other family might develop mental illness while others do not.

Mental disorders do often have a genetic or partially genetic basis. Genetics can make people more susceptible to specific mental disorders such as schizophrenia. But our experiences in life also play a role. Something such as post traumatic stress disorder is not genetic in nature.

Hello,

I see you are asking "What are the causes for ichthyosis spastic neurologic disorder mental retardation?"

The disease is caused by mutations in the ALDH3A2 gene on chromosome 17p11. 2 that encodes fatty alcohol: NAD+ oxidoreductase complex. About 72 mutations in the ALDH3A2 gene have been identified in SLS patients with missense mutations constituting the highest percentage.

No. Mental retardation is a developmental disorder and not a biological or genetic disorder that can be passed through the genes.

Yes, it runs in families. If a person has a family member with an illness, he/she is more likely to have one. That doesn't mean that he/she will have one.
