Plastic is not a simple material. Various types can be made from renewable, non-renewable and combinations of both types of material sources.Although plastics are often thought to be made only from petrochemical feedstocks there are a wide range of natural sources where the basic building blocks of the plastics are of natural origin. With organic chemistry and modern technology even the methane that comes from the decomposition of organic materials can be changed into any of the synthetic plastics we are familiar with. The first manmade plastic It is a thermosetting phenol formaldehyde resin, formed from a condensation reaction of phenol with formaldehyde. it is called Bakelite. Cellulose is another naturally occurring plastic.

There are also plastics made from both non-renewable and natural materials. These are common in the various biodegradable plastics.
