OPINION (see facts below) There is absolutely no proven evidence that cigarette smoking alone causes cancer or that secondhand smoke causes cancer. There are more environmental issues (car exhaust, pollution of the air in general) that can cause lung cancer and not all people get lung cancer or die from smoking or pollution of the air). Some people have worked in mining (dust from coal or other type of mines can cause lung cancer) and asbestos was another cancer causing agent as well as lead paint. People don't realize that the glues and yes, even the fabrics in some new carpets can lead to cancer, Allergies, etc., in SOME people. I phoned the B.C. Lung Assoc., and asked for their stats on cigarette related deaths and also stats linked to cancer. They were eager to give me the stats, but when I asked where they got their stats they said (I have it on tape) "Oh, these are just guesstimates." Not good enough! This was a prime time for "secondhand smoke" to come into the picture. Think! For years people smoked around others and there were no repercussions from this. Someone planted a seed in non-smokers minds and if the non-smokers and instead of the non-smokers looking at the whole picture and took on the total environment as a whole and spent more time on it instead of going after the smokers our environment would be almost pristine by now. Then I phoned MADD (Mother's Against Drunk Driving) and asked for their stats to related deaths due to drunk drivers and they came up with the perfect proven stats (get it from the police departments) with no nonsense. If we want a smoke-free society (will never happen in this generation) then we need to tell the truth and not give guesstimates. Is cigarette smoking good for you? No! Is drinking or over-eating good for you? No! I say, everything in moderation.

THE ABOVE IS OPINION NOT FACT (I have not edited it to avoid accusations of censorship). Please read on, then judge for yourself whether such opinions are responsible.

While I agree that everything should be taken in moderation and that we should do much more about environmental pollution, the defence of tobacco puts forward dangerously biased and wrong opinions about smoking and secondhand smoke.

There is a lot of evidence (decades worth) that smoking causes cancer and a lot of evidence that secondhand smoke is also dangerous. I have put a tiny fraction of well known research below just to emphasise this point.

In my opinion, it is irresponsible to suggest that there is NO evidence when clearly there is an overwhelming amount, all pointing to the many dangers of tobacco with regard to cancers (many types of cancer) Heart disease, eye problems, joint problems, respiratory disorders, throat disorders, sudden infant death, etc etc etc

Does passive smoking cause respiratory problems and increase the risk of heart disease and lung cancer in nonsmokers?

OF COURSE! & since I care, hear are a list of te Results for smoking, and second hand smokers--> What is Secondhand Smoke? Secondhand smoke is a mixture of the smoke given off by the burning end of a cigarette, pipe, or cigar, and the smoke exhaled by smokers. Secondhand smoke is also called environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) and exposure to secondhand smoke is sometimes called involuntary or passive smoking. Secondhand smoke contains more that 4,000 substances, several of which are known to cause cancer in humans or animals. EPA has concluded that exposure to secondhand smoke can cause lung cancer in adults who do not smoke. EPA estimates that exposure to secondhand smoke causes approximately 3,000 lung cancer deaths per year in nonsmokers. Exposure to secondhand smoke has also been shown in a number of studies to increase the risk of heart disease. Serious Health Risks to Children Children are particularly vulnerable to the effects of secondhand smoke because they are still developing physically, have higher breathing rates than adults, and have little control over their indoor environments. Children exposed to high doses of secondhand smoke, such as those whose mothers smoke, run the greatest relative risk of experiencing damaging health effects. Exposure to secondhand smoke can cause asthma in children who have not previously exhibited symptoms. Exposure to secondhand smoke increases the risk for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Infants and children younger than 6 who are regularly exposed to secondhand smoke are at increased risk of lower respiratory track infections, such as pneumonia and bronchitis. Children who regularly breathe secondhand smoke are at increased risk for middle ear infections. Health Risks to Children with Asthma Asthma is the most common chronic childhood disease affecting 1 in 13 school aged children on average. Exposure to secondhand smoke can cause new cases of asthma in children who have not previously shown symptoms. Exposure to secondhand smoke can trigger asthma attacks and make asthma symptoms more severe.

Why is rapid detection of disease exposure important?

Rapid detection of disease exposure is important for several reasons. For many diseases, detecting the infection and beginning treatment early may reduce the severity of the symptoms or even prevent the disease completely. Rapid detection of disease exposure is also important to prevent further spread of the disease.
