Snowball was not a traitor

Napoleon wants the Farm to believe that he is to make sure that if Snowball returns, he is met with negative energy and is kicked out of the Farm

Napoleon simply uses his friendship with Snowball at the beginning of the book to get a better position in the Farm until he becomes the "comrade" in charge.

To make sure that he stays at his position, Napoleon releases several lies regarding Snowball, that he ruins the Farm at night, that he demolished the windmill after the snowstorm, that he collaborated with Farmer Jones, etc...

This is similar to the characters both Napoleon and Snowball represent, Joseph Stalin and Leon Trotsky, respectfully.

Stalin and Leon were close friends before the revolution and until they both begin to compete for leadership of the Soviet Union.

Stalin gains enough influence to banish Trotsky from the USSR and strip him of all his heroic titles and his reputation. It is believed that Stalin eventually plotted the assassination of Trotsky in Mexico.

He was always good. He actually was trying to help the animals on the farm and stick to the Commandments, but Napoleon made him seem bad to benefit himself.
