As is often the case with legal questions, no simple answer exists. This is because different states have different laws. Making this more complicated is not only the different laws in existence in different states, but also the differences of definitions in different states. For example, what one state might consider to be a severe and illegal spanking, might be perfectly in line in another.

Currently, however, it seems to be the legal trend to work towards banning the spanking of children.

depends on which country and there could be local ordiences. Although in the us it is deemed religious freedom if it doesn't amount to abuse. use your best judgment and talk to other parents arround you.

If you use a whip or a belt or stick it can be considered child abuse. Especially if it is bare but. But if you just do the dirty work with your hands it would be fine and it would not be child abuse. My guidance person told me this.

It is in many countries, but many authority figures don't believe in hitting children because it can cause permanent psychological damage.

In the US, it's not illegal in any state for a *parent* to spank their child. It is illegal for a parent to beat their child. They're different different things.
