The E46 was the best of the M3 series in terms of power/handling/suspension etc. In its day the e30 was great but the E46 was better and is still better than the 2009 model.
Very debatableIn my opinion, the e30 M3 was the best because it offers an overall more raw driving experience and was the most successful production car ever raced.

The E30 M3 is a vehicle we will never see the likes of again. A production vehicle that thrived on both track and rally. It has been described as "the most successful production race car of all times" and "The winning-est production car of all times"
I have been lucky enough to own both and would have to say as a daily driver the E46 M3 is a superior motor vehicle, but, when you consider age in the equation I would suggest the E30 M3 is a marvel, that was way ahead of it's time. Which, I think all would agree, the E46 is not (although a very nice car). So pound for pound comparing them on toady's level the e46 m3 is probably a better car ... BUT ... is that a fair stage to compare a classic and a current vehicle on ?????
