A:

To be honest, we do not know. We do know that already in apostolic times, there were divisions in the Christian community, with each faction calling other factions 'false apostles'. Apart from the evangelist who wrote Mark's Gospel, the gospel authors were not necessarily aligned with the Apostle Paul, nor were they necessarily aligned with each other. Matthew's Gospel shows strong allegiance with the disciple Peter, but elements within John's Gospel indicate opposition to Peter. The Gospel of Thomas, although not canonical, is probably, along with Mark, one of the earliest gospels written and demonstrates that gnosticism dates back at least to the middle of the first century and could theoretically be older than the forerunner of Catholicism. Most of what we know about the early Church was written by the winners, so already we do not know which was really the first Christian Church.

We do know that by the second century, Christianity had established two main branches of perhaps similar sizes in numbers of adherents - gnosticism and the Catholic-Orthodox Church. We also know that gnosticism was on the wane by the third century and that Emperor Constantine destroyed gnosticism in the West, although it continued for some centuries in the eastern empire. Thus, the Catholic-Orthodox Church became the oldest Church to survive intact.

.

The Great Schism of 1054 created two separate Churches out of the one that preceded them - the Roman Catholic Church and the Orthodox. Both can lay claim to the heritage that came before, so (subject to the preceding paragraphs) the Catholic Church can claim to be the original Church in the west, while the Orthodox Church can claim to be the original Church in the east. From a truly Christian point of view, it may not matter.

Catholic AnswerYes, the Catholic Church is the original and only Church founded by Jesus Christ. It's founding is recorded in St. Matthew's Gospel, chapter 16, verses 17-19. Our Blessed Lord, Jesus Christ, guaranteed "His" Church as the only Church, St. Paul describes It as His (Acts 9:1-5; 1 Cor 12:12-14) Body, and It is to last until the end of the world - Our Blessed Lord put His Vicar, St. Peter and his successors, as Its visible head, and send the Holy Spirit to guide It until the end of the world. To doubt that it is the original and only Church is to doubt Jesus Christ's truthfulness and His ability to guarantee His Word. In other words, to doubt that the Catholic Church is the original and only Church is simply to deny that Jesus Christ is God.
