Scientology itself is not a cult because Scientology is not an organization. It's a belief system and series of methods. But the church of Scientology- which is the most well known (but not the only) group that offers Scientology services is a cult, in my opinion.

One reason I say that is that if a member is in touch with people who are antagonistic to the church, they are ordered to "disconnect" from that person. Unless they can somehow "handle" the person and get him or her to change their mind. Anytime anyone is expelled from CofS (the church of Scn) they are "declared" "suppressive" which is like being a sociopath. Alleged sociopath, I mean. Members are totally forbidden from being in contact with suppressive persons (aka "SP"s) even if they are married to them or the person is their parent or child or business partner.

Church staff tend to be overworked, paid very little and mistreated.

The church does not prohibit reading outside material, however, they do criticize people who read or watch the news a lot and frequently inveigh against the media. They have a similar attitude toward education. College isn't forbidden at all, but it's considered unnecessary when one could be just there working for the greater glory of CofS.

CofS has been linked to extremely problematic and abusive behavior. Several ex church senior management staff have recently come out and are going public with what happened to them.

If you thinking about joing the church of Scientology think about this what kind of church makes it's members pay annual fees to stay in shun anyone who isn't in it or has gotten kicked out even if they are your children or your wife.they even make you pay fees to join and to get correctly read that is the main reason that most people who are in the cofs are rich and/or powerful.

You should watch 48 Hours Scientology a Question of Faith on YouTube!

It exposes the cult of Scientology!

Whether I yes or no, it won't mean a thing because each one have his own definition of what cult is depending on which side of the fence he belongs.. Unless we agree on a definite definition of what a cult is, then all s will only incite a debate. May I post therefore a definition of Kevin Crawley then go from there.

Quote;

"Three ideas seem essential to the concept of a cult. One is thinking in terms of us versus them with total alienation from "them." The second is the intense, though often subtle, indoctrination techniques used to recruit and hold members. The third is the charismatic cult leader. Cultism usually involves some sort of belief that outside the cult all is evil and threatening; inside the cult is the special path to salvation through the cult leader and his teachings. The indoctrination techniques include '''

1) Subjection to stress and fatigue

2) Social disruption, isolation and pressure

3) Self criticism and humiliation

4) Fear, anxiety, and paranoia

5) Control of information

6) Escalating commitment

7) Use of auto-hypnosis to induce "peak" experiences''' ."

Back to your question; My , I don't dare to be the one to first.....

Christianity itself is not a cult under the above definition, which is a reasonable one.

Particular groups which have broken away from Christianity have the characteristics of a cult.

Christianity itself actually encourages people to think for themselves, contrary to what some people assert. It says:

1 Thessalonians 5:2121Prove (or 'test') all things; hold fast that which is good.Matthew 7:7-87Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:

8For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

Proverbs 1:77The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Regardless of the characteristics of a cult, the absolutely basic definition of a cult is "anything that denies, in some way, the deity of Jesus Christ" , and this is both the easiest and the most reliable test to use when someone comes door-knocking. Although some churches call themselves Christian but are actually cults, the vast majority of Christianity are not.

Scientology is not exactly considered a Christian religion, but it is considered a religion. You can be part of any religion (Catholic, Jewish, Christian,...etc) & still be a believer in Scientology.

The word "cult" is not well defined, and basically boils down to "religion the speaker/author doesn't like." I personally am a little conflicted by calling it a "cult" mainly because that implies that it's an actual religion, and not a scam masquerading as a religion for the tax benefits.

The Catholic Church exhibits very few, if any of the typical signs of a cult. It is accepted as a religion, not a cult.
