This is a northern hemisphere notion that considers south and bottom to be synonymous. It may also be encouraged by the layout of geography on world globes, with text being most easily read with the north pole as superior on the orb.
To make maps easier to read mapmakers BITD decided on an orientation, which happens to put Antarctica at the bottom.
There's no "real" reason, only convenience. Like reading and writing from left to right.
