Depends who you ask...haha :) RIM really developed the "smartphone" market with the Blackberry. It took off with the business community and became an essential tool for millions of business people around the world. Also they used a secure server environment. Although BB seemed like a smartphone when it came out, the iPhone truly redefined what a smart phone is. iPhone/iOS brough the dream of a handheld computer to reality. The "phone" is just a small part of what these handheld computers can really do. This is where RIM lost it with the BB, thinking business users will save them, while consumers adopt it.
So, in the past few years since iPhone, NO the Blackberry cannot be considered a smartphone anymore. It used to be but BB doesn't have the smart environment an usefullness of iOS/Android/Win8.
