Nantes. It is singular like the name Charles or the French spelling of Georges. The city is famous for the Edict of Nantes. At one time it had a Transporter Bridge based in part on overhead crane prionciples andthis ws for pasenger traffic. There wee bridges of thistype in Marseilles, Rouen, and otehr French cities.

When I ran a Bed and Breakfast establishment in Normandy, we had one unfortunate guest who arrived late, having arranged a rental car in Caen only to find that it was indeed waiting for him - in Cannes, several hundred miles away. He had made the mistake of pronouncing the letter N at the end of Caen, and forgetting the saying-through the-nose but. Be warned!

In the name "Nantes" you don't hear the two final letters. It is pronounced as in "you can't"
