Dysfunction of the nervous system does not contraindicate massage. My personal work involves working with the nervous system to release nerves and muscles. Active stimulation of the nerves, although painful, and with probable bruising, can improve nerve conductivity, increase mobilization, almost immediately restore range of motion, and is deeply appreciated by those who have grown familiar with the technique. I have seen rapid progress with those recovering from injury, suffering from MS, fibromyalgia, and loss of range of motion. If properly done it almost always alleviates pain within the hour.

Will massage benefit the urinary system?

Massage therapy benefits all body systems. Some forms of massage such as Reflexology, Thai massage, and Shiatsu have specific points or lines on the body that correspond with the urinary system or bladder as well as many other body systems. Since massage encourages the body to relax, the nervous system switches over the parasympathetic system, which helps all the systems to work together in harmony. (Note: If there is an infection of the urinary system, massage is contraindicated since the movement of blood and lymph from the massage could potentially spread the infection.)

Can neuropathy cause seizures?

Neuropathy is an umbrella term for a host of diseases of the nervous system that have to do with the dysfunction of peripheral and cranial nerves. If it is used as a general term for dysfunctions of the central and peripheral nervous systems, then neuropathy does not cause seizures, but is descriptive of the dysfunction of the system that can result in seizures.

What kind of massage techniques are effective for MS?

MS, or multiple sclerosis, responds well to gentle relaxing massage, such as Swedish. In MS the central and peripheral nervous systems are affected as the nerves lose their protective myelin sheaths, lose sensitivity, and bring on body aches and pains. Since there is often an emotional component, as in any chronic condition, a gentle, soothing, massage adds to a better quality of life which then allows the person with MS to cope better with their condition.

How does massage therapy affect the central nervous system?

It depends on the techniques that are used. Some techniques will stimulate the nervous system (such as some forms of tapotment). This is useful before an athletic event, because your muscles are stimulated. Some techniques act like a sedative, and are very relaxing (such as kneading, petrissage and effleurage). However, the effects of massage are more effective on the ANS (automatic nervous system) which houses the PNS and SNS. (parasympathetic nervous system, and sympathetic nervous system, respectivley).
