The particular story told in the movie was not real, but events similar to it have occured. The whole point of the show was to make people more aware of the problem of cyberbullying.

answer 2: according to the movie is not based in a true history but have similar events to the suicide case of Megan Meier a 14 year old. Lory Drew a mother of another teen who know Megan pose in MySpace as a 16 year old name "josh"

according to the investigation this woman contact Megan under this persona "josh" to get information about her and later used that information to spread gossip about Megan. she committed suicide according to investigation because this guy "josh" attack her via MySpace messages. in the movie this girl have communication with a guy "James" who really was a fake profile created by a friend of Taylor (one of her best friends). in the movie teens spread rumors and gossip about the Taylor who is being attacked at this social website. her mother talks to the school and school said they cant do nothing because is the "internet" in real life Christina Meier and Ronald Meieso create a foundation they push a law to the congress about ciberbullying.almost in the end of the movie Megan Meier name comes out. in the movie Taylor's mom said her friend have to face consequences (legally) in real life Lori Drew was charge with computer fraud and abuse act but charges where reverse in an appeal. in real life Lori Drew justify her horrible actions and confess to intended to use Meier's e-mails with "Josh" to get information about her and later humiliate her, in retribution for her allegedly spreading gossip about Drew's daughter.
