There are four certifications for medical assistants. They are:

- Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) certification from AAMA

- Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) certification from AMT

- National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) certification from NCCT

- Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) certification from NHA

Their requirements are all pretty similar, but the CMA certification is the best known and most widely recognized. All of them require taking an exam, but it's worth it to have better job opportunities.

Employers prefer to hire experienced workers or those who are certified. Although not required, certification indicates that a medical assistant meets certain standards of competence. There are various associations-some listed in the sources of information below-that award certification credentials to medical assistants, and the certification process varies. It also is possible to become certified in a specialty, such as podiatry, optometry, or ophthalmology.

Medical assistants deal with the public; therefore, they must be neat and well groomed and have a courteous, pleasant manner and they must be able to put patients at ease and explain physicians' instructions. They must respect the confidential nature of medical information. Clinical duties require a reasonable level of manual dexterity and visual acuity.

Although not required, certification indicates that a medical assistant meets certain standards of knowledge. It may also help to distinguish an experienced or formally trained assistant from an entry-level assistant, which may lead to a higher salary or more employment opportunities. There are various associations-such as the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) and Association of Medical Technologists (AMT)-that award certification credentials to medical assistants. The certification process varies by association. It is also possible to become certified in a specialty, such as podiatry, optometry, or ophthalmology.

Medical assistants may also advance to other occupations through experience or additional training. For example, some may go on to teach medical assisting, and others pursue additional education to become nurses or other healthcare workers. Administrative medical assistants may advance to office managers, or qualify for a variety of administrative support occupations. There are also a lot of good courses for medical office assistant training that you can get either from a school, training center or even online.

A medical office administrative assistant career is a good fit for those interested in working in an office, helping others, variety, and challenges. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were 527,600 medical assistants in 2010 and it will increase 31% by 2020. Medical office administrative assistants are employed in organizations, such as Physician, podiatrist, or chiropractor offices, Healthcare facilities. Medical businesses need employees to perform administrative and clinical tasks. Since medical assistants often work in the front office, they are the first impression patients make of the practice. Therefore, employers value employees with strong people skills. As physicians need people to handle the front office so they can spend more time with patients, it is no surprise that the medical assistant field is growing faster than average.
