Since When, the Web?

• There are no Web pages from the 1970s; the internet -- as we know it now -- did not exist then. I started using the Internet in 1993 and it was mostly text-based and had very few Web pages.

• The Web was invented by Tim Berners-Lee in 1989-1990. For example pages from the Web's history, check out the Way Back Machine at archive.org. This would only include pages since the mid-1990s, when the Web's popularity exploded after the introduction of the first graphical Web browser.

• The first website known to exist publicly was SYMBOLICS.COM. The site still exists, but is not updated at all. For a list of the first 100 public websites, you can check the link below.

Let's clear up a misconception. The "Web", or the World Wide Web, is part of the internet. The Internet started out as a file and message sharing system as part of the US Government agency known as the Advanced Research Projects Agency, (ARPANet), which then became part of the Defense Department and they stuck "Defense" in the front ("DARPANet"). At first there was little there except primitive email, file sharing, and so on, between research labs and colleges and stuff doing goverment research. "CompuServe" was an early commercial treatment of the internet, that used phone modems and dial up to access user groups, something called "UseNet". There was no "World Wide Web", so to speak. However, the above mentioned Tim Berners-Lee, a British researcher at the CERN physics laboratory in Switzerland, developed a method to view documents and their updates and related materials, using HYPERLINKS, (which was a concept that had been thought up, but not implemented, even earlier by a guy named Ted Nelson) and came up with the first early browser. This was the start of the "Web", as it's often called, in the early to mid 1990s.
