About Tom Walker
"The Devil and Tom Walker" is a short story written by Washington Irving. Irving is known as the writer of many famous stories, including "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and "Ri…p Van Winkle." "The Devil and Tom Walker" was first published in 1824 within a collection of stories called "Tales of a Traveller." Below are some of the plot points and themes that occur throughout the story."The Devil and Tom Walker" is about a man named Tom Walker. Tom values money over his family. One day, when walking through the swamp, Tom starts a conversation with Old Scratch, also known as the Devil incarnate. Tom discovers that Old Scratch is cutting down trees, each having a unique treasure inside of them. Old Scratch then offers Tom a trade: for Tom's soul, he will give him all the riches in the swamp. Tom takes the money and proceeds to live a life of swindling people out of money. That is, until he becomes afraid of what will become of him after he dies. He begins to praise God vehemently, but one day, he is confronted by a man whose money he had stolen. He lies and claims to have never taken anything; if he had, he challenges the devil to take him away. At that point, three loud knocks resound through the house; Tom is drawn to a black cloak figure. This is, of course, the devil who takes Tom away on the back of his black horse. One obvious theme in "The Devil and Tom Walker" is that of greed. It is because of greed that Tom agrees to sell his soul to the devil. Throughout the story, even after he has made a great deal of money, Tom refuses to spend money on anything but himself. He allows his wife to live in near poverty throughout most of the novel and will not even feed his horses. Of course, greed is also what ends Tom's life. He is greedy to keep a pious exterior because he is frightened of his own fate. Tom, therefore, lies about taking any money and this greed is what gets him taken away by the Devil.Hypocrisy is another theme that runs through "The Devil and Tom Walker." Tom himself is a hypocrite. He claims that he has too much of a conscience to become a slave trader. However, he has no problem swindling people out of their money through the guise of a moneylender. The theme of hypocrisy runs throughout the story and is another indication of Tom's bad character. His thinking that he is a good man only leads the reader to feel his non-pious side even more strongly.Almost the entire story of "The Devil and Tom Walker" is based on the concept of wealth. Tom sells his soul for wealth. He also takes other people's money to enhance his own wealth. However, it is not only Tom that is affected by wealth. The people whose money he takes believe that they are putting their finances in the hands of a moneylender. They are, therefore, doing so to increase their own wealth. Nothing good comes to any of these characters. Tom's customers, of course, lose their money to him. Tom himself loses his life because of his own thirst for wealth.Throughout "The Devil and Tom Walker," Irving created an exceptionally dark mood. The imagery and descriptions used are generally dark and dingy, perhaps meant to inspire fear. It is in the darkest part of the forest that Tom initially meets the devil. Upon their meeting, the reader is notified that this is an ominous situation. When describing the devil, dark imagery is also used. He is said to have a dingy face that was stained with soot. In the end, of course, Tom is taken away by the devil dressed in a black cloak and riding a black horse."The Devil and Tom Walker" is lesser known than some of Irving's other popular works. However, it has the same kind of dark mood that stories like "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" employed. At its core, "The Devil and Tom Walker" speaks against greed and hypocrisy. Irving is calling his readers to abandon their search for wealth at any cost. At the time that the story was written, land speculation was running rampant in the United States and everyone appeared to be trying to increase their wealth. "The Devil and Tom Walker" is a call for that behavior to cease.Washington Irving referred to New York City as "Gotham." The name grew in popularity and eventually became the name of the city in the Batman comics and movies. (MORE)

Finding the Best Entertainment and Gay Bars in Chicago
As the third largest city in the country, Chicago, also known as the Windy City of Chi-town to the locals, is home to a large and thriving gay community. The city was once nic…knamed "Paris on the Prairie" and with good reason. The city is filled with parks covered in shade trees, wide tree lined boulevards, many of the finest restaurants in the country, and most importantly a fantastic selection of gay bars. The range of LGBT entertainment found here easily rivals that of its European twin and more.If you have just moved into the city, getting to know your way around can be challenging. If you are a member of the gay community, it can even harder. Fortunately, Chicago has a very active and thriving LGBT community. Scattered throughout the city and suburbs there are dozens of gay bars and clubs to choose from. Not only does this mean you won't have to travel far to find a bar, it means you can just be yourself as you should not have a problem finding a bar to meet your style. Some of the bars are a little more low-key than others, but once you meet up with a few friends you will soon find all of the best gay clubs in town. If you are planning to make Chi-town your new home, there is a lot more to being happy here than the party and entertainment scene. You need to find the right area to live. Much like San Francisco on the West Coast and Boston on the East, Chicago has its own gay friendly communities, which incidentally are also home to several of the best bars. Boystown is the name given by locals to East Lake-view, here you will find the city's largest gay community. In Andersonville, Chi-town's other large gay community you will find several top bars offering amazing entertainment. It is also home to the city's two openly gay bathhouses. If you are looking for gay oriented entertainment, all you have to do is decide what you are looking for. For example, the Berlin Nightclub offers different activities such their Perv nights, Madonnarama, or monthly Bjork nights. The music scene here tends towards punk and they party into the early hours. Each bar has their own idea of what they want to offer. Feel like being Lady Gaga for a night, there are several clubs offering lookalike competitions. Want a quiet place to take a date and get to know each other, try the green tea martinis and indie style music at Wang's one Chicago's most popular LGBT bars. One question that seems to come up frequently is whether the gay clubs and bars in the Windy City are gender specific. In some areas the bars are very restrictive and only allow gays, transvestites, and transgenders. Other bars may be just for lesbians and males are not welcome. Fortunately, the LGBT community here is far more open minded than most. While there are bars and clubs that are gay specific, there are also a number of them where everyone is welcome. Several even go so far as to offer a range of entertainment designed to cater to all members of community. The gay nightlife in Chicago would not be complete without a great selection of shows to enjoy. While dances and spending time shooting pool can be fun, everyone needs a little more in the way of entertainment from time to time. At the Neo-Futurism club they offer an act called "In Too Much Light Make the Baby Go Blind", the cast works their way through a total of 30 of their own original plays in 60 minutes. This show has been going on for 20 years and is always a sellout. In the clubs and bars you can find live gay soap operas, musical troupes and more, you need never worry about being bored on any night of the week. In a city known for it amazing array of foods, sports teams, and nightlife, the gay community here is very active. There are literally dozens of gay bars to choose from located throughout the city. The largest concentration of them are in Andersonville and Boystown, the two predominantly gay communities in the city. There are dance clubs, theaters, and improv groups to enjoy and much more, making Chicago one of most gay-friendly cities in the country. To help you find the best gay bars and entertainment in Chicago, there are a number of publications that are specifically targeted towards the gay community. Boi magazine provides a full rundown of gay clubs and the latest in entertainment. The Windy City Times is the only gay newspaper in the city and Grab magazine offers information on local bars, clubs, and businesses who cater to the gay community. (MORE)
Attitudes Slowly Changing Towards Gay Chinese Couples
Even though homosexuality has been legal in China since 1997, it is still treated as taboo for gays to display affection or flaunt their status in public. Gay festivals and ga…therings are not allowed and are immediately shut down, as well as gay websites. It's not just the government that shuns homosexuality, but families as well. In China, and many other parts of Asia, marriage is not just the only means of continuing the family line, but a spouse is also needed to help care for aging parents, which is an important part of Chinese culture. China legalized homosexuality in 1997, but even though it may be legal, there are still no laws barring discrimination based on sexual orientation. This means that gays can be discriminated against in the workplace, preventing many from being open and coming "out." While China's Ministry of Health is open about gay issues, many gay Chinese believe this to be just so much propaganda, says Zhang Beichuan, a professor at Qingdao University who is an expert on homosexuality. Zhang believes that discrimination issues affect more than a million gay Chinese and their immediate families. Because China's governmental policies and legislation have fallen so behind in regard to social developments, he believes it will be years before these issues are given any serious attention.Since 2012, Hong Kong has been granting visas to partners of gay professionals, allowing them to live there long-term. Called extended visitor's visas or de facto relationship visas, they allow those partners of homosexuals with work visas to stay in the city as long as they remain in the relationship. The visas are renewable numerous times without having to leave Hong Kong to re-qualify. Although they allow applicants to stay in the city, their status is more like that of a tourist as they aren't allowed to work or get an ID card, or qualify for permanent residency after seven years. Also, the visa must be renewed every six months. A spokesman for the Immigration Department said the visas were based on a married couple, as in one man and one woman, but it was up to the discretion of the director to consider exceptions to the rule. Same sex marriage or civil unions are not legally recognized in China. In a 2009 Beijing poll, 30 percent of the population supported same sex marriages, but the remaining 70 percent were either opposed or unsure. Even though China does not legally recognize same sex unions, Beijing and Hong Kong both provide dependent residency status to same-sex partners of legal residents. Historically, Chinese culture has been much more tolerant of homosexuality than those countries with strict religious issues such as Catholicism. Although gay marriage may not be legal, it hasn't stopped gay Chinese couples from having a marriage ceremony, even if it's only symbolic. Even though she doubts it will happen anytime soon, Li Yinhe, a leading pro-gay sociologist and researcher from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, has begun rallying supporters for the same sex marriage bill for the fourth time. With approximately 16 million Chinese women married to gay men, Li argues that by allowing same sex marriage it would prevent countless tragedies and relieve pressure on gay men by preventing them from being forced to marry women. Even though laws protect gays and lesbians from governmental discrimination there are no such laws that govern the workplace. If they are fired by a private employer they have absolutely no recourse. This is one important reason why approximately 90 percent of gays aren't open about their sexuality. Many lead double lives, marrying the opposite sex just to avoid discrimination in the workplace. Most gays face pressure from family and society as well. Other areas, such as gays serving in the military, are not discussed in China because gay rights are kept hush-hush in the media. Any reports aired by the media are usually in regard to issues such as HIV and AIDS. It's estimated that 80 percent of gay Chinese men marry heterosexual women because of social and family pressure. This equates to approximately 16 million wives, called tongqi, that are married to a gay or bisexual man. Just as in the U.S., gay issues depend on geographic and economic divisions. For those Chinese families living in rural areas, the word "gay" has no meaning beyond being happy. This puts even more pressure on gays and lesbians from these areas as their families are steeped in old world culture, rules, and traditions, making it even harder for them to understand the concept of homosexuality. But in large cities such as Shanghai and Beijing, there are large populations of homosexuals found, with plenty of nightlife and gay clubs. Perhaps one of the most troubling issues facing gays is the Chinese family culture that emphasizes the importance of having children. Adding to the problem is China's one-child policy which puts even more pressure on families with an only son to keep the family line going. In 1997, China decriminalized homosexuality, and in 2001 removed it from the list of mental disorders. Even though it was legalized by the government, there are still no laws to prevent discrimination of gays in the workplace. While there is much support for gay marriage, it too faces an upward battle. It's not all bad news for Chinese gays and lesbians, though, as the large cities such as Hong Kong, Beijing, and Shanghai have numerous clubs and support groups. Hong Kong has also begun offering visitor or de facto visitation visas, allowing partners of gays with work visas to remain living together indefinitely. Directly across the Taiwan Strait lies China's renegade province, Taiwan, the host of Asia's largest gay pride parade. In 2012, Taiwan's legislature held the first hearings on the issue of gay marriage, making some wonder if Taiwan would be the first Asian country to legalize gay marriage. Taiwan is considered to be a province of China, so if passed, it would mean gay marriage would theoretically become legal in greater China. (MORE)
