Is watching television in the dark bad for your eyes?
yes new studies show that it is not good. yes it makes your eyes strain to see, which is probably why most people get tired while watching tv, the pupil in the eye is cons…tantly adjusting in size to the different levels of light, so it could cause eye fatigue. That is, it makes your eyes tired and could make it temporarily harder to focus. It's not likely to cause permanent damage. No it isn't. A television is a cathrode ray tube with is in effect shooting light onto pixels. Therefore when you watch tv in the dark you are basically watching a light. Having an alternate light source in the room will make no difference whatsoever to your eyes, except if that light source is reflecting off the glass TV screen which would cause a glare. If this happens then your eyes will really strain because they are trying to adjust to see the light from the CRT. So, having another light on when watching TV could actually hurt your eyes! Don't watch TV in the dark! How many times have we heard that? The truth in the statement lies in understanding contrast ratios. The eye can adapt to an very wide range of light levels, but it can only adapt to one light level at one time. When one looks at a bright computer monitor on a dark background the eye doesn't know whether to adapt to the bright monitor or the dark background. When this happens hour after hour, day after day, fatigue sets in. The same thing can happen when looking at a brightly lit sheet of white paper in a dark room. To lessen eyestrain: lower the brightness on the monitor; increase the light in the surrounding area; or both. Just the opposite problem can occur when one places a computer monitor in front of a window. The bright daylight surrounding the screen makes it difficult to see what is on the screen. It is best to place the monitor perpendicular to the window to minimize high contrast and reflections on the screen. NO! Watching T.V. in the dark is not bad on the eyes. Setting to close to the T.V. is not bad on the eyes. ophthalmology facts are available on the related links below Answer">Answer But I for one do not believe them, a newer study by Sciencedaily came up with a different result. Have a look at their report on he related link below It is a myth that watching TV in the dark is bad for the eyes with no scientific basis. The eye is able to view varying degrees of light intensity and colours due to the presence of rod and cone cells present within the retina of the eyeball. Rod cells are responsible for night vision and cone cells are responsible for more detailed, trichromatic vision. Utilising a combination of these cells will not damage the eye. The myth is linked to the fact that reading in the dark is bad for your eyesight. This is indeed fact due, to the fact that most people require the straining of their eyes in order to make out characters in a book. Rod cells are not particulary good at viewing objects in detail. Any prolonged straining of the eyes can be damaging. Watching tv in the dark at the correct distance is not damaging. Don't you think the popularity of cinemas would have rapidly decreased otherwise? Please note that prolonged viewing of any single object CAN cause eye fatigue/strain, which once again can be damaging to the eye; this should not be confused with the act of watching TV in the dark. Remaining a focus on a fixed point for very long periods of time, such as a screen can be damaging, in light or dark. Sitting close to a screen is NOT recommended, because the light intensity is far greater at short distances. If your eyes feel discomfort, have a break. Source:Prof. Simon King E ANSWER The eyes are not hurt by watching TV in the dark. If you watch a lot of TV the contrast difference may cause some eye strain, but this only causes eye fatigue which really isn't all that bad for the eyes. The eyes are more durable than that. Answer_with_physics_(kind_of)">Answer with physics (kind of) If you look at those motion pictures as a source of light, then you can picture having some light in the room can cancel out some of the lights sending from the TV through destructive interference. However, constructive interference can also occur which can amplify the color. So I don't really know whether constructive or destructive predominates (probably has something to do with the geometry of the light source and the TV). One thing for sure, with no lights in the room, the colors are truer since there's no interference. Answer: Millions of people who watch movies in dark theaters around the country dont seem to complain out the lights being out while watching their flick. Is reading in the dark bad for your eyes?
According to "Howstuffworks.com":Most experts agree that reading in low light does not damage your eyes. It can cause eye strain, however, which has a number of unpleasant tem…porary symptoms and possibly some long-term effects. When the room light is low, your eye adjusts in several ways. First, the rod and cone cells on the retina begin to produce more light-sensitive chemicals. These light-sensitive chemicals are the first step in detecting the light, converting it to an electrical signal and transmitting that electrical signal to the brain. Second, the iris muscles relax, which causes the opening of your eye, the pupil, to become very large. This allows your eye to collect as much light as possible. Finally, the nerve cells in the retina adapt so that they can work in low light. These three changes take about 20 minutes to 2 hours, but they increase your sensitivity to low light by about 10,000 times. When you read, your eye must be able to focus an image of the words onto your retina. To do this, the iris, as well as the muscles that control the shape of your lens, must contract to keep the focused image on the retina. If you read in low light, your visual muscles get mixed signals: Relax to collect the most light, but at the same time, contract to maintain the focused image. When that object is poorly lit, focusing becomes even more difficult because the contrast between the words and the page is not as great, which decreases the eye's ability to distinguish visual detail. That ability is called visual acuity. Your eyes have to work harder to separate the words from the page, which strains your eye muscles. Consider this to be strenuous exercise for your eye muscles. So your eye muscles will ache, much as your arm muscles and leg muscles become sore after strenuous exercise. When your eyes are working this hard for a long period of time, the strain may cause a number of physical effects. Symptoms of eye strain include sore eyeballs, headaches, back and neck aches, drooping eyelids and blurred vision. Because you often don't blink enough when focusing on a single object, you may also experience uncomfortable dryness in your eyes. None of this damages your eyes, and all of it eventually goes away after you stop straining them. Many eye doctors leave it at that, but some note that eye strain may contribute to nearsightedness. Most people who are nearsighted were born that way, but there is evidence that prolonged eye strain can make it worse. If you are comfortable reading with a flashlight (or other low light) and don't experience any of the above symptoms of eye strain, it's probably fine for you to read this way. It's certainly easier on your eyes to read in good light, however. You can also avoid eye strain when you're reading by blinking frequently and taking a moment to focus on something out the window or across the room every 15 to 30 minutes. (MORE)

Is playing on computer in the dark bad for your eyes?
I knew a friend who read in the dark, and she needed glasses later on. The computer monitor emits a pretty strong light, and if it puts strain on your eyes when you do i…t in when its light out, then its worse in the dark. Whenever it gets to dark in my room when I'm playing on the computer, I just turn on the lights. Might as well not take the risk! (MORE)
