Due to Kennedy's cautious firmness with Khrushchev during the Cuban missile crisis, the Soviets publicly dismantled their missiles positioned on Cuba. They returned the parts to the Soviet Union, in exchange for a public US declaration that the US would never invade Cuba.

Many people are not aware of this, but the US already had a secret plan to remove the then obsolete Jupiter and Thor missiles from Turkey that had the USSR so worried before the USSR started sending missiles to Cuba. As part of the deal with Khrushchev to remove his missiles Kennedy used back diplomatic channels to offer removal of the missiles from Turkey in exchange for removing the missiles from Cuba (of course without admitting we were already planning to remove them). That deal helped simplify a lot of things.
