A line drawing depends upon a line to indicate the contours of forms and features in a drawing. Cartoons and comic book drawings are good examples of these. They were widely used in books and gazettes (along with etchings) for a couple of centuries, due to their compatibility with early printing techniques. (See Charles Dana Gibson, Thomas Nast and Franklin Boothe) A tone drawing (more prevalent during and since the Impressionist movement) relies upon shades of any monochrome scale (usually grey or umber) to describe and convey the volume of a form. Some of John Singer Sargent's charcoal studies are good examples, as are the powerful drawings of Kathe Kollwitz.
Slant line is a line which is not horizontal or vertical. In drawing they help to form proportional objects.
Contour-line drawing refers to drawing the outline of something, usually a human figure. Matisse has many examples of this.
Tonality is what scale the music is in, usually major of minor. -major = happy -minor = sad -modal = sounds like monks singing in a monastery -pentatonic = chinesey- gamelan music, all the black notes -atonal = clashing sounds, nothing nice about it
Contour drawing a is a type of line drawing that uses line and not tone to indicate form and features.
Accented outline drawing is when you apply extra pressure to the pencil whenever a line in the drawing crosses, intersects, or changes direction.
A tonal drawing is done, usually in pencil, using tones of black through the greys to white (the white is the colour of the paper). Coloured pencils, crayons, charcoal, and other mediums, can also be used to create a tonal drawing.
